It’s Good to Be Back
After 8 weeks of closure West Waterford Golf Club reopened its gates on Monday May 18th. In line with the GUI protocol all was in readiness for the restart, and the new look 14 minute time sheet filled quickly. Whereas golf had stopped, nature continued its course and we returned to a stunning scene of mature trees in full bloom and a magical array of colour throughout the course. Our greenkeeping staff had fairways, rough and greens mowed to perfection as the sand glistened in the meticulously prepared bunkers. Even the weather obliged with sunshine

A Message from our President

As West Waterford Golf Club welcomes back our loyal members and take tentative baby steps towards normality, I wish to thank all for their support and patience during this difficult time. May I also salute all our front line workers who sacrifice their very existence to keep us safe. Please respect and adhere to the strict protocol in place, bearing in mind that this is just Phase 1 in a 5 phase journey.

Stay Safe. Pat Murphy President WWGC.

GUI and ILGU issue protocol for reopening of Golf Courses

Golf will resume on Monday May 18th on a limited basis under a strict GUI protocol following consultation with the relevant Government departments and State agencies in the Republic of Ireland. As one of the first sports to be allowed to resume, there is a major responsibility on golf clubs and golfers to ensure that our sport is conducted in a safe and responsible manner. Full adherence to the provisions of this Protocol is absolutely essential.

The biggest discussion point for golfers last week was the 5km travel rule.

Golf Courses Hoping to Reopen after May 5th if the government opt to lessen lockdown restrictions.

Golf is hoping to be one of the first sports to get the nod to resume after May 5th if the government opt to lessen lockdown restrictions. There has been a halt on all Irish sport for well over a month as the country gets to grips with the coronavirus pandemic, with the latest government restrictions set to remain in place until after the May Bank Holiday weekend. However, Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan said in a press conference that the resumption

Coronavirus will Pass

The first thing I’m going to do when golf resumes is go straight to my nearest course, walk onto the first tee, peg up my ball and take a brief moment to appreciate being back in my happy place before I hit my shot. The second thing I’m going to do is hit a provisional.

Our Two Golf Professionals

During the week I have been in contact with Seamus Power and Gary Hurley. Just like you, they are not playing golf at the moment and I thought you might be interested to see how they are coping

Late Jimmy Harty A Master of his Trade

With great sadness we recently learnt of the passing of Jimmy Harty who had a long association with West Waterford golf club. Back in the early nineties Jimmy was engaged as the main contractor in the construction of West Waterford golf course. Well known for his expertise in land drainage he had no problem turning his hand to this new and exciting challenge. To quote the man himself “I could get water to run up a hill with this Hy-Mac.” Jimmy met up with another master Eddie Hackett and together they planned
