Winter League Matchplay Pairings

The matchplay round of the Comeragh Oil Winter League starts on Monday Jan 9th.   The team pairings are as follows:

Cheetahs vs Rams, Bulls vs Sharks, Stallions vs Wolves, Bears vs Lions, Rhinos vs Stags, Leopards vs Tigers.  Individual matches will be played in order of handicap as listed on the team sheets. Five points will be awarded for a win and 2 points for a loss. Team captains are requested to exchange team listing and contact numbers with their opposing team.  Individual matches can be played any day subject to pre booking on BRS booking system.   Owing to the ongoing unpredictable weather conditions, a   team member who has not played in the singles round to date, can still play a match provided he pays the initial entry fee. League players are advised to play their matches as soon as possible. Any problems should be referred to a member of the Winter League Committee. The matchplay will run until Sunday January 29th.  We will continue to run a weekly 13 hole stableford competition for the duration of the matchplay stage.  On conclusion of the matchplay round we will revert to the next round of singles stableford.

Pat Murphy honoured with Munster Club Volunteer of the Year Award.

In November, Golf Ireland launched the Club Volunteer of the Year Award by way of recognising the invaluable contribution of individual club volunteers. Clubs were invited to nominate a volunteer who, in the opinion of its members, has gone above and beyond to make a positive difference to other members. Nominations were received from clubs right across Munster, reflecting the passion and willingness of the many volunteers.

West Waterford Golf Club nominated Pat Murphy as he has been the epitome of volunteerism for 30 years. He was involved in the course design with Pat Spratt and the late Eddie Hackett and has been a constant figure in volunteering and supporting members over the 30 years. Pats volunteerism was not confined to course project, he was our first Club Captain and in recent years was Club President. He has been an integral part of a successful Junior Club at West Waterford and Seamus Power and Gary Hurley never miss an opportunity to thank Pat for his support as their career’s progressed through the amateur ranks on to the professional ranks.

The Regional Executive Committee of Golf Ireland Munster provided Pat with the perfect Christmas present in announcing that he is the inaugural Munster Club Volunteer of the Year 2022 Winner.

Pat will be presented with his award at the Munster Branch Regional AGM on Tuesday 17 th January. Pat now goes forward as the Munster representative in the All-Ireland Club Volunteer Award for 2022.

Congratulations Pat to you and your family from everyone at West Waterford Golf Club and we are proud to have you as an ambassador for our club.

We hope Pat’s award will be a catalyst for others to get involved in volunteerism.

Seamus Power finishes tied 25th in Hawaii Heat

Seamus was playing in the Sentry Tournament of champions at the weekend along with many of the top ranked golfers in the world.  This was his first tournament of 2023 following his Christmas trip to Ireland to meet up with family and friends.  The West Waterford man is now playing at the top table and was quick to admit that his performance left a lot to be desired and he has “a lot to do” to get his game in shape.  Seamus carded a bogey free three under 70 in his final round to tie for 25th on 15-under par and remain top of the FedEx Cup standings.  He is scheduled to arrive in Abu Dhabi at lunchtime on Tuesday as he prepares to tee it up for Great Britain and Ireland in the Hero Cup at the weekend.  “I’m a bit away from where I’d like to be, so some work to do over the next couple of weeks”.

Playing Handicap for winter

For the duration of Winter Rules (Nov. – Mar.) the handicap committee has introduced a 90% handicap limit.  To facilitate this, when you sign-in, using the Playing Handicap Table posted at the sign-in desk, for your handicap index, simply check what your 90% playing handicap is from the table.  Please familiarise yourself with any temporary local rules during the Winter golf period.

Course Updates

Due to the prevailing weather conditions, it is essential that members check the online timesheets and read the BRS notifications on a regular basis.
