Winter League Round 3 Matchplay

The team pairings are as follows:

Cheetahs vs Rams, Bulls vs Sharks, Stallions vs Wolves, Bears vs Lions, Rhinos vs Stags, Leopards vs Tigers.

After the improved weather last week, the sun continued to shine in West Waterford this week resulting in the vast majority of Winter League Round 3 matches being completed. A slight hiccup occurred on Sunday morning when there was a bout of frost out of the blue which meant the course couldn’t be opened until midday. A number of matches had been pencilled in for the morning, and the players involved were given the option to play on Bank Holiday Monday 6th. The results of the Matchplay round will be compiled by the committee and communicated later this  week. Round 4, which will be the final qualifying round due to the bad weather over Christmas, will begin on Monday 6th February and continue for 3 weeks until 26th February. The top 4 teams will then progress to the semi-finals, with a provisional date of Sunday 26th March being pencilled in for the final.

Seamus Power News

At the time of writing, Seamus hasn’t begun his final round at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-am. Saturday play had to be suspended due to high winds, and in fact, the tournament is now set for a Monday finish. After a steady, if unspectacular, first round, Seamus caught fire on Friday shooting an outstanding 64, repeating his feats from the opening two rounds at this event last year. Saturday began very promisingly also, and Seamus reached -10 after 12 holes, within two shots of the lead. However, possibly due to the high winds, he then went bogey, double-bogey, bogey in his next three holes before play was suspended for the day. This left him on a score of -6 and he remains on this score after completing his third round on Sunday morning, in a tie for 18th place. A good final round and he will have a chance of securing another top-10 finish. We wish him luck.

Gary Hurley News

Gary took his place at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship on the DP World Tour this week. Unfortunately, his driver mis-behaved on the ultra-tight fairways of the Al Hamra course, and he struggled to rounds of 72 and 75 to miss the cut by 5 shots. Gary will know better than anyone, however, that these setbacks are inevitable in golf, and I’m sure he will be ready to go again when he tees it up at this week’s Singapore Classic. All in West Waterford wish him well.
