WL Leaderboard after Round 4:

Another dry, if somewhat cool, week saw another big entry to the weekly competition and the culmination of the Winter League qualifying rounds. While the Easterly wind may be causing relatively cool temperatures, it is doing wonders in terms of drying out the course, and it is great to see a bit of Spring in the air and run on the ball!

The Winter League qualifying rounds were completed this week and, as predicted, even the best efforts of the chasing teams couldn’t shift the top 4 from their positions, although the Stallions can consider themselves a bit unlucky to miss out by just 3 points. The line-up for the semi-finals is the Lions v Cheetahs and Wolves v Leopards. These 4 teams were the most consistent performers throughout the league and fully deserve to have qualified. No doubt, two close contests are in store for the semi-finals. Matches will be over 18 holes and must be completed by Sun 12th March. The grand final will take place on Sun 26th March. Best of luck to all players.

Due to the dryer condition of the course, this week’s weekly Singles competition will be over holes 1-16.

Comeragh Oil Winter League Semi-finals

Seamus Power News

Seamus took a well deserved break from competition last week, and will face into this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational relaxed and refreshed. He will be hoping to maintain his consistency for this week, another elevated event, and the following week’s Players Championship in Sawgrass. Despite not playing last week, Seamus remains in 4th spot in the overall FedEx Cup rankings.

Gary Hurley News

Gary made the trip from Singapore to India this week for the Hero Indian Open. On Thursday, the difficult course in Delhi got the better of him however as he scored a +8 total of 80 shots. An amazing round was needed on Friday to have a chance of making the cut, but Gary only managed a creditable 73 leaving him on a total of +9 for the week. The difficulty of the course was demonstrated by the halfway cut falling at +4, the highest I can remember for a long time on the DP World Tour. With no tournament next week on the tour, Gary will play in the Kenya Open the following week. This year, golf has taken Gary from UAE to Thailand, Singapore to India and now to Africa. What a great experience this is for any young man (note the slight hint of jealousy!!)

Captain’s Drive-in

Captains Michael Cass and Nora Flynn will hold their eagerly awaited Drive-in on Sunday 12th March. No doubt Michael and Nora are looking forward to this event that traditionally kicks off the golfing season. A mixed scramble will take place afterwards and this will be followed by a social event in the clubhouse. Please show your appreciation to Michael and Nora by attending.

Photographs and Golf Memorabilia

I went into the clubhouse during the week and was delighted to see so many high quality photographs of West Waterford’s golfing history on display. A lot has been achieved in our relatively short history, with many more achievements to come in the future I’m sure. On behalf of all members, a big thank you to all involved in putting this golfing memorabilia in place.

Membership

Thank you to all members who have renewed their membership for 2023. A fantastic year of golf is being planned by the Management Committee in what is the club’s 30th year in existence. It is also great to see so many new members joining our club. We extend the famous West Waterford welcome to you all.

West Waterford on Social Media

If you want the latest information on how Seamus and Gary are doing, or want to see the latest on West Waterford in general, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are the places to be. Clubman Conor Blackwell spends hours every week updating the West Waterford social media accounts and I encourage all members to follow them. Make sure to tell your friends as well!!
