Comeragh Oil Winter league

Owing to weather conditions over the past number of weeks progress has been slow for our winter league.  Whereas some golf is being played we do not have the required team entries to complete round 2.  We are continuing round 2 this week in the hope of seeing this round completed by Sunday next January 8th.  This would leave us in a position to begin the matchplay round which would run over three weeks.  Our team managers are keeping in contact with their teams, and we would remind them that only players who have paid the initial entry fee are eligible to participate in the matchplay round.  Full details of the matchplay rules will be circulated to team managers via WhatsApp during the week.

Seamus Power honoured at Civic Reception

On Tuesday December 20 two-time PGA Tour winner Seamus Power earned a just ovation from councillors, family and golfing colleagues when he was awarded a Civic Reception at City Hall Waterford.  The West Waterford golfer was being recognised for his outstanding achievements notably his second PGA Tour win at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship in October 2022.  Proposing the motion, Cllr Pat Nugent (FG) outlined the numerous sporting achievements of Seamus during his juvenile and teenage years in a variety of sports.  The motion was seconded by Cllr Mairead Tobin (FF) followed by fulsome remarks from Cllrs Damien Geoghegan (FG), Thomas Phelan (Lab), Conor McGuinness (SF) and Jody Power (GP).  Following a standing ovation Seamus thanked the Council for the honour they had bestowed on him.  He expressed his pride in being from Touraneena and representing his county and his country.  He added that it is a special honour to represent “the most loyal and fantastic club in the world”, West Waterford. This was the second time for Seamus to receive a Civic reception.  He was previously honoured at the Civic Offices in Dungarvan following his participation in the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Sentry Tournament of Champions

Having enjoyed the Christmas festivities with his partner Casey and his family it’s back to business as usual for Seamus Power when he drives off at the Sentry Tournament of Champions on the Kapalua Plantation Course on January 5-8th 2023. Seamus finished tied 15th on 20 under par at this event in 2022. Top ranked golfers from around the world compete in the championship to raise funds for charity.  Fans will see Seamus battle it out with Scottie Scheffler, Viktor Hovland, Tom Kim, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Thomas, and Jordan Speith. In all 39 players including 17 from the world top-20 will compete for a share of the $15 million total purse and there is no 36 – hole cut.  You can follow the action live on Sky Sports.
