Lions v Cheetahs; Wolves v Leopards

This week saw the weekly competition being played over 16 holes for the first time this year. The dryer condition of the course resulted in some very good scores with Frankie North just pipping Lee Hyslop to first place on a count back. Cork man Pat Higgins continued his recent run of excellent form to finish in third place.

The Winter League semi-final matches are well underway and two tough contests are expected. Players have until Sunday 12th March to complete their match.

Winter League Matches:  The February results of the Winter league confirmed that Una Mulligan’s team The Hybrids continue to maintain their lead.  The dream team consists of Ger Curran, Bridget Broderick, Anne Phelan and Margaret Looby.  Joan Sheehan, Captain of the Right Hookers will be plotting a strategy for her team’s March campaign.  Only eight points behind the leaders Joan has a very capable team comprising Mary Herlihy, Joan Nugent, Ann Hogan and Teresa Ahearne.  Battling it out in third place we have two teams both on the 182 mark.  Suzanne Dalton captains the Pitchers a team that includes the inform Denise Nugent, a worthy winner of the Individual competition in January and February, Stella Kinsella, Doireann Cotter and Therese Troy.  Also right there are the Drivers captained by Trish O Shea who has the ever consistent Phil Kelly, Reena Landers, Neil Suipeal and Aoife O Dwyer.  Ciara Donnelly captains the Big Bertha team currently lying in 5th place with 180 points.  An interesting team,  Ciara is backed up by our Lady Captain Nora Flynn, Delia Smith, Marcella Scanlon and Elsie Hickey

Nice Win for Jo Swayne:  It was lovely to see Jo Swayne back on the fairways and playing very well.  Playing off 10 Jo had a lovely score of 39 points in the Mary Spratt sponsored February 9 hole competition.  Denise Nugent will be busy at the next prizegiving!  Denise was second with 38 points while the 9 hole specialist Ger Curran continues her good form by filling the third slot with 36 points

Junior Academy

Our Junior golfers will soon be out in force on the fairways, beginning an exciting season ahead for them. A schedule of events for March to May was sent to parents and our first day out is Sat March 11th at 3pm. This year we will be entering a Fred Daly boys team and the draw was made during the week. West Waterford have a bye in the first round and will play the winners of Thurles and Dundrum in the second round. The match has to be played by April 30th, and a provisional team will be put together for practice on March 11th. I’m looking forward to getting the busy season started!

Seamus Power News

This week Seamus teed it up at Bay Hill for the Arnold Palmer Invitational. From early on Thursday, Bay Hill was set up to be very difficult, with very fast greens in particular. Seamus played steady golf on Thursday and Friday and just made the cut on the number (+2). The weekend didn’t go too well for him though where, surprisingly, the par-5’s seemed to cause him difficulty. He ended the week in 72nd place, but only dropped one place to 5th in the FedEx Cup standings. Seamus will be hoping for slightly better fortune in this week’s Players Championship in Sawgrass, the flagship event of the PGA Tour.

Gary Hurley News

Gary had a rest week this week as there was no tournament scheduled on the DP World Tour. This coming week he is in Africa for the Magical Kenya Open. Gary will no doubt be hoping for a ‘magical’ week himself as he tees it up in the warm conditions.

Save the Date!

Sun 12th March, 1pm: Captain’s Drive-in

Don’t forget next Sunday at 1pm when our esteemed Captains Michael Cass and Nora Flynn tee off.  A  mixed scramble will follow and all are invited to a “bit of a do” in the clubhouse later. Please show your support to Michael and Nora by attending.

7th – 9th April: Easter Weekend Open 3-ball

Please show your support to this open event sponsored by O’Mahoney Business Advisors.

28th Apr – 1st May: May Bank Holiday Classic

This is a fundraising classic for the club and will be an open 3-person format. Member and Guest support is greatly appreciated.

Inter-club Teams

The draw for the Inter-club matches was made on March 1st. West Waterford have entered teams in most of the competitions, with Vice-Captain Niall Colleran taking on the role of looking after everything. Some matches must be played by April, so preparations are well underway and teams will be picked over the coming weeks.

Spring is in the Air in West Waterford!

As I was playing this weekend I couldn’t help but feel a sense of Spring and a buzz in the air! The course was dry underfoot and evidence of all the work being done was clear. Fairways and greens were in excellent condition as always, but the rough and trees are being well maintained also. Great work has been carried out clearing out overgrown areas, including the superb job on the 11th hole. It was great to see that new flags and cups are in place and all in all the course is in great shape. Then there is the Garden Kitchen Café where I went up for a coffee with my playing partners to relive the day’s golf. More often than not, it’s the best part of my day! It’s great to see the café is now open five days a week, Wed to Sunday.
