WWGC Weekly News Mar 12th 2023
A Drive In with a Difference! The weather may not have been great in West Waterford on Sunday but the Captains’ Drive In certainly lifted the spirits! The Captains Michael Cass and Nora Flynn were lead to the first teebox by a lone piper Kieran Power followed by a large number of members. The atmosphere was wonderful and the bagpipes certainly added to the occasion. The planned scramble was cancelled and all adjourned to the Clubhouse for lovely canapes supplied by the Garden Kitchen café. Maybe it was the bagpipes, but all present enjoyed the great spectacle of Ireland beating Scotland in the Rugby match later in the afternoon. On behalf of all the Members I wish Michael and Nora and our President Jim Moroney the very best of luck for the season

Winter League Semi-finals
Lions v Cheetahs; Wolves v Leopards
The rain returned with a vengeance this week and resulted in fewer players getting out for their game. Despite the bad weather, Ken Fenton and Phil Kinsella both produced great scores, with Ken just claiming first prize. Congratulations to both men.
The weather also had an effect on the Winter League semi-finals, with many of the matches still to be played. As a result, the deadline for the semi-finals is being pushed out to next Sunday 19th March. There was great excitement in the matches that were completed and it is anyone’s guess who will make it to the final on Sunday 26th March.

Ladies Club News
Winter League Update: The entries for the March Winter League have been excellent. The matchplay rounds are almost completed. Please note that all individual matches and matchplay rounds must be completed by Friday March 24th. We will need all the results in order to organise the teams for the final on Sunday 26th.
Get into Golf: It is nice to see the Get into Golf players out on the course. Indeed their commitment would put some of us seasoned campaigners to shame! Once the Winter Rules are lifted a big effort will be made to have cards for Handicap purposes submitted.
Golf Lessons: If you feel your golf game needs a little tweaking or you are new to the game the good news is that Aaron Crotty intends running a four week programme for group lessons in the near future. The maximum number in each group will be 6 and it will cost €10 per lesson. Please give your name to Una Mulligan if you are interested in participating

Junior Academy
There was disappointment for our Junior golfers this week as the start of their season on Saturday 11th was cancelled due to the course being closed. However, the great thing about golf is that there is always another day and hopefully the weather improves for next Saturday 18th March when we go again. Please assemble on the practice green for 2.45pm.
Members News – Paul Kelleher aces the 13th!
I am delighted to report that Paul Kelleher enjoyed his first Hole in One last weekend. Playing Noel Conway in Matchplay Paul teed off with a 6 iron to the elevated and tricky 13th green. The conditions were blustery but Paul used the wind and was delighted to see the ball disappear into the hole for a memorable hole in one. To make it an even better day Paul won the match 3&1. Congratulations
Seamus Power News
Conditions in the Players Championship played in the iconic course which is TPC Sawgrass in Florida were tough this week. On the first day while Seamus played solid golf the putts would not fall and Seamus returned a score of 2 over. With an early start on the following day Seamus carded a 76 which left him well outside the cut, the first time he has missed a cut in the last six months. Seamus’s next outing is the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin on March 22nd. On Monday Seamus heads off for a practice match with Shane Lowry in Augusta as he prepares for the Masters in early April.
Gary Hurley News
There was no magic for Gary Hurley in the DP World Tour last week. Gary played in the Magical Kenya Open and was going well on the second day until a horrible seven on the Par 3 13th ruled him out of the weekend. We look forward to Gary’s next outing in the SDC Championship played in the St Francis Links, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Inter-club Teams
The draw for the Inter-club matches was made on March 1st. West Waterford have entered teams in most of the competitions, with Vice-Captain Niall Colleran taking on the role of looking after the mens teams. As usual the Ladies teams will be managed by volunteers who have offered to manage specific teams. Some matches must be played by April, so preparations are well underway and teams will be picked over the coming weeks.
