Frank Claims the Captain’s Prize!
The Men’s Captain’s Prize was held from Friday to Sunday in what were interesting weather conditions to say the least. Our Captain, Michael Cass, was on hand from the first tee time each day to greet each and every competitor – a lovely touch that everyone appreciated. And I suppose it’s fair to say everybody appreciated the free pint with the entry fee as well! The weather conditions on Friday were pretty miserable for the players with a constant drizzle all through the day. Conditions improved somewhat on Saturday and on Saturday evening the Sunday tee times for the top 36 and ties were released. On Sunday, the qualifiers, who had to contend with the threat of thunder and lightning as well as the competition, went out in reverse order with the leaders in the last three-ball. This final three-ball consisted of Frank North, Michael Culloo and Richard O’Gorman, three men who have been in fine form all year. People were sure that if they could hold their nerve, the winner would come from this group. And so it turned out! With Michael Culloo slipping back somewhat, it was left to Frank North and Richard O’Gorman to battle it out. In the end, Frank emerged victorious with a 1pt win. Special mention must also go to Patrick Power who produced a brilliant two-day total but was not eligible for first prize due to the competition rules. After a great weekend of golf, a great night is promised when the prize giving ceremony takes place on Sunday 2nd July in the clubhouse. All that’s left is for me to thank Captain Michael, who also held a competition for Ladies and Juniors, for putting in such long hours over the weekend and to give my congratulations to all the winners.

Ladies Notes
Suzanne Dalton Plays Super Golf to win Cass & Co Competition: Suzanne Dalton was in the Prizewinners last Sunday but she brought her game to a new level on Thursday last. Playing off 36 Suzanne returned a great score winning the much coveted Cass & Co hamper with 42 points. You had to be on your game on Thursday as Delia Smith also playing off 36 returned to the Clubhouse with 41 points in the bag. In third with a mere 40 points (and I jest!) we had Marie Curran playing off 32. Fabulous shooting ladies. Many thanks to Stephen Cass from Cass & Co for sponsoring.
Mary Fahey can’t be Stopped: Mary Fahey is playing outstanding golf at the moment. At the weekend Michael Cass very kindly included us in his Captains week-end by staging a 9 hole competition on Saturday afternoon. Conditions were excellent and if you came off the course with 22 points then I think you would be well satisfied! However Mary Fahey scorched round to bring in a massive score of 25 points playing off 15. Well done Mary and thanks to Michael Cass for hosting the competition.
Monday Mixed Scramble provides plenty of Entertainment: Played every Monday evening the 9 hole Mixed Scramble is a most enjoyable affair. Last Monday evening Denis Looby, Stephen Walsh and the golfing legend Reena McDonald took home the goodies. These are regulars in the Winners enclosure. Please come to the Clubhouse at 6pm on Monday evenings to take part in the fun scramble.

Well Done Ladies.

On Wednesday 21st June, eight of our Juniors teed it up in neighbouring Dungarvan GC in glorious Summer sunshine. This was the first of 6 fixtures in a Deise Junior League that had been organised by clubs in Waterford County. It’s a great opportunity for our Juniors to play other great courses and the experience will surely help to improve their games. It proved to be a successful first outing for West Waterford as the boys picked up the first team prize with a super total of 180pts. The team on the day were Conor Keane, Leo Mulhall, Ross Kavanagh, Conor Lynch, David Prendergast, Rueben O’Brien and Brian Scanlan. Mick Curran also played and will be a valuable team member in the future. Congrats to the boys! The prizes will be presented at the next fixture, Tramore GC on July 4th.
On the home front, on Saturday 24th June a big number turned out for the Captain’s Prize to Juniors. The Captain himself, Michael Cass, was there with some words of encouragement and support for the boys and girls before they began. Thanks to Michael for this and the kids all appreciated it. The competition proved to be of a very high standard. Kieran Murphy continued his good form with a score of 23pts, just beating Brian Curran into second with 22pts. Brian also picked up the gross prize with a superb 14pts and Ted Lynch was 3rd with an excellent 21pts. Well done to all!
