Captain’s Prize Presentation

On Sunday evening 2nd July, a big crowd gathered for the presentation of the prizes for this year’s Captain’s Prize. Captain Michael Cass welcomed everyone and said a few lovely words before presenting the prizes to all the winners. The 2023 winner, Frank North, spoke very well as he received the magnificent Waterford Crystal Trophy 1st prize. I’m certain it will take pride of place in a prominent position in his home. All in all, a great night of celebration was enjoyed by everyone present. Captain Michael put in a huge effort to ensure the night was a success and he should be very pleased with how it all turned out.

The Spratt Trophy – 30 Year Anniversary

Next weekend will see the holding of the annual Spratt Trophy. This year is especially important as it marks 30 years since the club was founded by Pat and Nora Spratt. Over the years, the Spratt family has had immense involvement in running the club and it is an understatement to say that the club would not be where it is today without them. Even to this day, members of the Spratt family are very active in helping out with the Gents, Ladies and Junior sections. We invite all members to play in this 18 hole competition for Ladies and Gents to show our appreciation for the Spratt family. It promises to be a great celebration.

Gents Results

Sat/Sun July Monthly Medal sponsored by The Old Bank

1st Simon Dawes (29) 71

2nd Alan Alcock (17) 72

Gross Daniel Burke (6) 81 (b9)

3rd Eoin Prendergast (21) 74

The weekend competition saw the holding of the July Monthly Medal kindly sponsored by The Old Bank. It’s fair to say Competitors got a surprise to discover it was stroke play over the full blue tees (some pleasant, some not so much!), and to make matters even worse it was played in very windy conditions. This is reflected in the scoring, where Simon Dawes is possibly a little surprised to learn of his win, although 71 was a super score given the conditions. Cork man Alan Alcock came in 2nd place with 72 and Eoin Prendergast was 3rd with a 74. Daniel Burke took home the gross prize with an excellent 81. At the end of the day, the consensus from players was that the blue course could, and maybe should, be used more frequently as it is a super test of golf.

Ladies Notes

Bridget Blackwell Breezes to Victory in Maria Moloney Boutique Competition: Conditions on Thursday were good for golf, but that said, returning a score of 67 Nett is a fair achievement and that’s just what Bridget Blackwell playing off 29 succeeded in doing.  A super score!  Hot on Bridget’s heels we had Jean Conway playing off 22 who returned a fabulous 69 nett while Jo Swayne, a late runner on Sunday evening scooted round to record a score of 70 nett playing off 20. Well done ladies and special thanks to Club Member and Owner of Maria Moloney’s Boutique Margaret O Sullivan for sponsoring.  Margaret has been very generous sponsoring in West Waterford for many years.

Ger Curran is back at it in the June 9 Hole competition!  9 hole competitions are definitely Ger Curran’s specialist subject.  In the June competition with two cards to count Ger returned a score of 49 Points playing off 17 to win Jean Conway’s prize. Ger was well ahead of Marie Curran playing off 16 who had what I would consider to be a very respectable score of 44 points!  In third position we had Kathleen Broderick playing off 18 with a nice score of 41 Points.

Monday Mixed Scramble getting very competitive!:  The Monday evening Mixed Scramble organised by Joan Sheehan and assisted by Jim Moroney is really becoming very popular and attracting all the big names!.  Last Monday the conditions were excellent.  The Prizes on offer would in no way effect your Amateur status.  Father and son combination Mark Kuhne and son Joe ably assisted by Aine Parks were convincing winners. In second we had Michael Gill, Noel Baldwin and Mary Donnelly while the third slot was filled by Richie Quealy, Brian Collins and Frances Carroll. Remember if you are not in you can’t win so just be at the Clubhouse at 6pm on Monday evenings.

Get Into Golf Scramble:  On next Tuesday July 4th there is a Get into Golf Scramble starting at 6.00pm.  Be sure not to miss it.  It will be followed by the Presentation of all Outstanding Prizes.

Presentation of Outstanding Prizes:  If you are one of the lucky people to have featured in these Notes over the past few weeks then you will need to come out to the Clubhouse on Tuesday July 4th to collect your prize or prizes in many cases!

Spratt Trophy:  The inaugural running of the Spratt Trophy was held last year.  This competition is confined to Members of West Waterford and is contested by the Ladies and Men.  The competition runs on Saturday and Sunday and is part of the 30th Anniversary celebrations for West Waterford Golf Club.

Junior Academy News

Two Junior competitions were held this week. On Monday, Ted Lynch took 1st place with 18pts in what was a very tight affair. Leo Mulhall was just pipped into 2nd and Kieran Murphy into 3rd all on a countback. Peter Cummins took the gross with an impressive 15pts. Then on Saturday evening, Charlie Kelly celebrated his first official handicap by claiming first prize with 19pts. Kieran Murphy and Ted Lynch continued their consistent run of form by taking 2nd and 3rd prize respectively and Ross Kavanagh claimed the gross. The presentation of all June prizes will take place in early July and the date will be communicated to parents along with the schedule of Junior days for July and August.
