Fri April 7th – Sun April 9th: Easter Open Scramble sponsored by O’Mahony Business Advisors

1st Eoin Conway (3), Denis Conway (10), Noel Conway (24) 103pts

2nd Noel Landers (18), Sonny Landers (19), Pat Landers (19) 100pts

3rd Mark Coughlan (17), Sean Tobin (18), Liam Troy (25) 98pts

Finally, after all the bad weather over the last few months, our first 18-hole competition of the year, open to ladies and gents, took place over the Easter weekend. While winter rules were still in effect, the course had dried out significantly and golfers could sense the return of summer rules just around the corner. A huge number of teams played, both members and visitors alike, showing their appreciation of the kind sponsorship by O’Mahoney Business Advisors. As well as being dry, the course was in great shape with the fairways cut and the greens fast. It all led to some super scoring, with the Conway Team, no doubt benefiting from Eoin’s long drives, leading the way with a huge score of 103pts. In second place were the seasoned campaigners, the Landers brothers, returning a score of 100pts. This left the team of Mark Coughlan, Sean Tobin, and Liam Troy to pick up 3rd prize with a very commendable 98pts. All in all, a wonderful weekend of golf was had, and the winners were presented with their prizes on Sunday evening in the clubhouse.

Winter League Semi-finals

Lions v Cheetahs; Wolves v Leopards

A seemingly never-ending Winter League is finally nearing a conclusion. In what proved to be two very close contests, the Cheetahs captained by Pat Curran and the Wolves captained by Eddie Stack will contest the final. Both teams have played some great golf, especially in the matchplay where they knocked out the number 1 and 2 seeds respectively in the semi-finals. Allowing for the weather, unlike previous years, the teams will be given until Sunday 23rd April to complete the matches, with the presentation of prizes being held at the end of the month. Best of luck to both teams in the final!

Crean Mosaics 18 Hole Competition (GOY):  Thursday marks the return of 18 hole competitions in West Waterford.  Sponsored by Crean Mosaics the competition can be played on Thursday or Sunday.  This year all 18 hole Single competitions will count for Golfer of the Year points.  The magic target is a minimum of 30 points which are needed to get on the Golfer of the Year league.  The 10 best cards submitted throughout the season will count.  I am looking forward to managing the league points each week!

9 Hole Stableford Competition: Running in conjunction with the 18 hole competition we also have a 9 hole stableford competition which counts for handicap.  This gives players the opportunity to play the 18 hole on one day and the 9 hole on the other. You cannot enter both competitions on the same day.

Junior Academy

Our J3, J4 and J5 group played on Tuesday 4th April, with their next day on Tue 11th April. Our J3’s are anxiously awaiting Summer rules so they can start returning cards for handicap purposes, but they shouldn’t have too long to wait now.

A Fred Daly panel of 8 was communicated to parents and we will be selecting the 5 for the team in the next couple of weeks. We have a home tie against the winners of Thurles GC and Dundrum GC to be played by 30th April.

The draw for the eagerly awaited Adult/Junior Matchplay will be communicated this week.

Seamus Power News

We were all glued to a rain interrupted Masters this week, where our very own Seamus took his place in the elite field. Seamus was cruising along on the first day at 3 under par until double bogeys on the final two holes had him end the day on a +1 total. To his credit, Seamus battled hard on Friday to make the cut comfortably, shooting even par on the day. The weather took its toll on him over the weekend, and he finished the week on +7 in a tie for 46th place. The tournament was won by the new number 1 in the world, Jon Rahm, winning his second major in the process. The other major storyline was how well the LIV tour contingent performed, with strong showings from Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, and Patrick Reed. It will be very interesting to watch the remaining Majors this year to follow the rival tours battling one another!

Sympathies:  On behalf of our Club, I would like to offer our sincere sympathy to the following members who recently lost loved ones.  Michael and Jack O Donnell, Killossera on the death of their father John, Eithne Ashby on the death of her brother Laurence and Mary Fahey on the death of her mother Mary O Brien, Clonmel.  May they Rest in Peace.
