Hybrids cruise through Winter League Final: Maybe the clue is in the name, but the Hybrids cruised through to win the Shaws sponsored Winter League. On Sunday Una Mulligan’s team put up a strong performance to take the title. Ger Curran, Bridget Broderick, Ann Phelan, and Margaret Looby all contributed to a comphrensive win. The Big Bertha team came storming through to take second place. Captained by Ciara Donnelly the team comprised of Nora Flynn, Delia Smyth, Marcella Scanlon, and Elsie Hickey. The third place went to The Drivers captained by Trish O Shea and comprised of Phil Kelly, Reena Landers, Nell Suipeal and Aoife O Dwyer. The Irons can be considered unlucky as they finished in fourth place, just pipped for third place on the countback of points. Mary Curran was Captain and other team members included Marie T Curran, Bridget Blackwell, Rosemary Sexton, and Vicky Mulhall. Congratulations to all the prize-winners.
Denise Nugent Reigns Supreme: In the Singles element of the Winter League Denise Nugent reigned supreme by winning all three individual competitions for the month of January, February, and March. This has never been achieved in the history of the Winter League. Well done, Denise.
June Whyte tops March 9 Hole! June Whyte certainly relished the soft going in March. Sponsored by Trish O Shea June returned a very nice score of 39 points playing off 9 Marie T Curran who I know likes good ground also had a good score of 35 points to take second place playing off 10. Jean Conway continues to play steady golf and playing off 11 returned a lovely 35 points to take third.
Keeping the West Waterford Flag Flying: Obviously we are used to Seamus and Gary keeping the West Waterford profile in the limelight, but credit must also go to Jean O Donovan and Ainé Parks who have won numerous prizes in the Junior Alliance. This competition has been played throughout the Winter Season and Jean and Ainé have scooped up prizes in Gowran, Cahir and Faithlegg. Well done, Ladies.
Inter Club Teams: Our Challenge Cup team are playing Faithlegg in Faithlegg on this Saturday. We wish them the very best of luck. The team comprises of Nora Flynn, Ainé Parks, Mary Fahey, Ger Curran and Trish O Shea. The matches get underway at 2.00pm. Why not travel down to support them.
Golf Lessons: If you feel your golf game needs a little tweaking or you are new to the game the good news is that Aaron Crotty intends running a four-week programme for group lessons in the near future. The maximum number in each group will be 6 and it will cost €10 per lesson. Please give your name to Una Mulligan if you are interested in participating.

Winter League
Lions v Cheetahs; Wolves v Leopards
With the rain falling persistently all week, we were lucky the course was open on Saturday and Sunday at all. With the ground too soft for heavy machinery, the grass in the rough and fairways was the longest it’s been in a long time. The local rule regarding lost balls got plenty of use no doubt! The greens on the other hand were in super condition as usual, so fair play to green-keeping staff for having them so good. Despite the less than ideal playing conditions, Percy Walsh was on fire, returning a great score of 38pts. Percy was playing with Patsy O’Donnell and his son Anthony. It must surely have been a great experience for young Anthony to witness such an experienced campaigner in action. In second place was the consistent Frankie North with a very worthy 37pts. Congrats to both men.
The weather continues to have a detrimental effect on the Winter League semi-finals. There are four matches remaining to be played, and as predicted, the outcome of these matches is needed to confirm the overall results in what are two close contests. With an improving forecast for the week ahead, the remaining matches are expected to be completed by next Sunday. A decision on the final will be taken once the semi-final results are known.

Junior Academy
After a successful first day out with the J3-J5 group, this week it was the turn of the J1-J2’s. On Saturday evening 10 eager young golfers took to the fairways where they practised for the Junior Sixes competition that will take place later in the year. The consensus of the Junior leaders on the night was that the future of West Waterford is safe in the hands of these youngsters. Some super golf was played on the evening and everyone went home happy. Our next day for this group is Saturday 15th April.
I mentioned the Junior Super Sixes. This is a new concept being introduced by Golf Ireland for Juniors. West Waterford has been selected to hold the regional final of the Super Sixes Inter-club in July.
Finally, 24 teams have entered the Adult/Junior matchplay. The draw will be made and communicated this week and the competition will run over the Spring and Summer months.

A new scorecard has been drafted and will be available in time for Summer Rules. Kindly sponsored by FBD Insurance, the new card is a bi-fold, easy to use colour card. It features the club’s new logo and reflects the new Gents par of 73. I’m sure everyone will be impressed when they see it.
Seamus Power News: This is a big week for Seamus as he competes in his second Masters in Augusta. The tournament gets underway on Thursday. We will all be glued to the TV and hopefully Seamus will play his usual consistent golf. Augusta is like Hallowed ground for all golfers and it requires lots of patience, skill and a little luck. C’mon Seamus!
