Ladies Notes – West Waterford

Fine Win for Mary Herlihy:  The Crean Mosiacs sponsored 18 hole competition took place on Thursday and Sunday last.  Thursday was a washout and the members came out to play on Sunday.  Mary Herlihy playing off 32 is showing good early season form returning a nice scroe of 34 points.  Lady Captain Nora Flynn had a solid 32 points playing off 30 while Ciara Donnelly clinched third place, on a countback, with 30 points playing off 25.  Well done Ladies and many thanks to the Sponsors Crean Mosiacs. Great start to the Golfer of the Year League

Fun Scramble:  On Easter Monday morning it was nice to see the Fun Scramble organised by our very hardworking House and Social committee take place.  The inaugural winners were David McAndrew, David Moloney and Joan Nugent.  In second we had Terry O Callaghan, Ciaran Power and Reena Landers.  In third we had Frances Carroll, Geraldine Curran and Stella Kinsella. This competition has now been moved to 6pm each Monday evening.

Inter Club Teams:  Practice is underway for our Inter Club teams.  This year each draw appears to have a number of byes so many of the West Waterford Teams are awaiting results of matches before we can kick off the campaign.  I wish all our teams the very best of luck

Get Into Golf Handicaps: Hopefully the weather Gods will cooperate and we will have Summer rules in place. It is nice to see so many Get Into Golf players out playing, so now is the time to get those cards in for handicap.

Gents Results

The Old Bank April Monthly Medal

1st Cian Lougheed (9) 43pts

2nd Frank North (21) 42pts

It was hoped that Summer Rules would be in place for the first major of the year, but more rain during the week scuppered that plan. Like last year, the April Monthly medal was once again played under Winter Rules this weekend. However, with the weather feeling warm for the first time this year, and the greens running fast and true, the fact we were placing the ball was hardly noticed. This was certainly the case for young Cian Lougheed, who produced a superb 43pts to claim the medal first prize. The in-form Frankie North can consider himself a little unlucky that his excellent 42pts was only good enough for second place. All in all, after the success of the Easter Open last weekend, it was nice to get the first 18 hole singles competition completed. And hopefully, Summer Rules will be in place for next weekend!

Winter League Final

Cheetahs v Wolves

The long awaited final is well underway. The Cheetahs are playing the Wolves, with results of individual matches steadily coming in. A very close contest is anticipated and the winning team will be known next Sunday 23rd April.

Gents Fixtures

Tue 18-Apr: Deise Golf World Open 9-hole Singles

Sat/Sun 22/23-Apr: Murray’s Pharmacy 18-hole 3-person Team Event

Sun 23-Apr: Comeragh Oil Winter League Final

Junior Academy

Due to rain earlier in the week, our session for the J3, 4 and 5 group was rescheduled to Friday 14-Apr. 10 boys took to the fairways, with some of them practising for the upcoming Fred Daly Inter-club competition. Our next day for this group is Saturday 22–Apr.

Then the following day it was the turn of our J1 and J2’s. Some future stars in the making were observed as we practised for the Golf Sixes event.

Regarding the Fred Daly, the panel is being whittled down and the final five are close to being confirmed. We are awaiting the result of Thurles and Dundrum, and then a trip to Tipp awaits as we are away against the winners of this match. The match will likely take place on the weekend of 29/30th April, but will be confirmed to parents as soon as possible.

Gary Hurley News:  Gary, following a short break travels to Japan this week.  What a beautiful time to visit Japan as their world renowned Cherry Blossoms are in bloom.  Gary is hoping to get to play in the ISPS Honda Championship.

Sympathies

On behalf of West Waterford Golf Club, I would like to sympathise with Liam and Sean Curran on the passing of their mother, Maureen. May Maureen rest in peace.
