West Waterford Golf Club News – w/c 25th Nov. 2024

Ciara Donnelly elected as Club President

History was made in the club this week, when Ciara Donnelly was the first lady to be elected Club President. While the role of President is typically a ceremonial and leadership position, it is also a pivotal in setting the tone for the club’s culture, values, and vision.

Ciara has been a very active and hard-working member of our club since she first joined in 2000. She has served in various roles on the Ladies committee, including as Lady Captain. In recent years, she has served on the Management Committee, as Club Secretary.

With her excellent golfing knowledge and understanding of the club, Ciara is an excellent choice to take over from our previous hard-working President Jim Moroney. In her role she will prove to be an excellent support for our incoming Ladies and Gents Captains, and the Management Committee. We all wish Ciara all the best for her 2-year tenure and look forward to an excellent Presidency.

Separately, on behalf of everyone in the club, we would like to extend our gratitude to Jim Moroney for his excellent stewardship as President over the last 2 years. While his presidency reign is finished, I am sure we will see Jim continuing to support the club in the coming years.

Shane Hanrahan elected as Men’s Captain for 2025
At the Gents Club AGM, Shane Hanrahan was elected as Men’s Captain for 2025. A dedicated member for 21 years, this marks Shane’s first foray into committee roles. However, he is no stranger to club activities, having been an active participant in team events such as the Pierce Purcell Shield and Jimmy Bruen Shield over the years. Shane is widely regarded as personable and well-liked, making him an excellent choice to lead the club in the coming year. Details of Shane’s committee will be announced in the weeks ahead.

Geraldine Hickey Elected as Ladies Captain for 2025
At the Ladies AGM, Geraldine Hickey was elected as Ladies Captain for 2025. A longstanding and dedicated member of the club, Geraldine has served on various committees and held the role of Ladies PRO multiple times. Known for her passion for golf, she has an impressive record, winning two of the last three Lady Captain’s Prizes. Recently, she even reduced her working hours to dedicate more time to the sport she loves.

With her own wealth of experience and the guidance of her husband Edward, a former Gents Captain, Geraldine is set to be an outstanding Ladies Captain for the upcoming year. Details of her committee will be shared next week.

West Waterford Golfers on the Professional Circuit
It was a challenging week for Gary Hurley and Séamus Power as they navigated their respective tours. Gary competed in the BMW Australian PGA Championship in Brisbane, where he recovered from a tough opening round of 74 with an impressive 67 on day two. Unfortunately, his second-round heroics weren’t enough, as he missed the cut by just one stroke. Looking ahead, Gary will head to Melbourne this week to take part in the ISPS Handa Australian Open, hoping to carry forward the momentum from his strong second round.

Meanwhile, on the PGA Tour, Séamus Power teed off at The RSM Classic in Georgia, the closing event of the FedEx Fall series. After an opening round of 76, Séamus withdrew from the tournament due to a back injury at the start of round two. Thankfully, his withdrawal didn’t affect his FedEx Cup standing, and he remains ranked sixth in the AON Next 10 standings. This position secures his entry into key early-season tournaments, including the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational signature events.
