The Spratt Trophy – 30 Year Anniversary

On Sunday 9th July, we celebrated 30 years since the foundation of the club by Pat and Nora Spratt. Over the years members of the Spratt family have been heavily involved in the running of the club and many are still helping out to this very day. A large competition entry turned out in appreciation of the Spratt’s, in what proved to be a hotly contested affair. The West Waterford layout clearly suits recently joined member Gary Manning’s game, as he romped home in 1st place with a fantastic 40pts. Beaten into second was the in-form Noel Conway and a surprising return to form saw Lanson Kelly pick up third prize. Rounding out the prize winners were Brian Foley who picked up the gross with an excellent 32pts, Kieran Mulligan and Joan Sheehan, flying the flag for the Spratt family, who bagged the best ladies prize. All prizes were presented on Sunday evening where the large attendance enjoyed a great night of celebration.

Ladies Notes

Joan Sheehan Keeps Flag Flying!  Last weekend the second running of the Spratt Cup was held.

Conditions were nice and the entry was excellent in this competition which is open to both the Men  and the Ladies. Well done to Joan Sheehan who kept the flag flying for the Ladies (and even the family) when she featured in the main prizes. (See Mens Notes for full report).

The Early Bird catches the Worm:  This saying was very apt on Thursday last when the July qualifier for the Mna Eile was held.  Setting off on the fairways at 8.30am Bridget and Frances Carroll hardly caught a drop of rain.  Bridget had a very nice score of 40 points playing off a diminishing handicap of 28.The skies opened around 11 followed by a deluge for the rest of the day.  However a little rain would not deter the every consistent Eithna Ashby who returned a score of 35 points playing off 25.  Other qualifiers included Betty Joyce Castlemartyr, Bridget Broderick, Frances Carroll, Marian Hilliard and Marie Curran.  Lets hope the weather will be a little kinder for the August 3rd qualifier.

Presidents Prize to Ladies:  On Sunday next the much anticipated President’s Prize very kindly presented by Jim Moroney will take place. We are all looking forward to this competition.  Please ensure that you have your name in for the draw which will take place on Thursday evening.  We are very grateful to Jim for putting up the Prize.

Golfer of the Year Hotting Up!  The new format of the Golfer of the Year competition has proved to be a big success and we are now entering into the phase of 10 Best Scores to count.  Eithna Ashby has taken the lead with Mary Lou Carroll, Jean Conway, and Nora Flynn in hot pursuit.  Me thinks there are interesting times ahead!

Junior Academy News

On Tuesday 4th July, eight of our Juniors travelled to Tramore GC for round 2 of the Deise Junior League. The weather was good, other than a few thundery showers towards the end of play, and all eight performed admirably. Unfortunately, we didn’t pick up the team prize, but Ross Kavanagh got 5th prize in the individual competition with a superb 43pts! Great shooting Ross on a new course! Round 3 of the league will be held in Faithlegg GC on Fri July 21st.

The first round of the Golf Sixes League unfortunately had to be postponed due to the weather on Friday 7th July. It will now be held in September instead.

On the home front, the Adult/Junior matchplay has reached the quarter final stage, except for a couple of outstanding games. The competition is hotting up with a couple of juicy ties ahead. Best of luck to all remaining teams.

On Tuesday 11th July at 12.00 (following the weekly competition) we will present all outstanding June prizes in the clubhouse.
