Condolences

John Walsh RIP

It is with great sadness that we share the news that John Walsh of Abbeyside has passed away on Sunday afternoon 8th October.

Big John Walsh was a proud and dedicated member of our Club since its opening 30 years ago. He was an active playing member and last May he was still hitting his drives as well as any golfer half his age as he said himself. This gave him great satisfaction!

He loved his golf and the beautiful course we shared during many rounds in West Waterford. He would deliver a running commentary or lesson about the topography of the course, and point out the features of trees and shrubs during the four seasons of growth.

He often recalled visiting Pat Spratt’s Orchard which is now holes 6 to 9 as a Teagasc Horticultural Advisor. He was extremely passionate and knowledgeable about biodiversity and he shared it freely for the benefit of our course and our gardens.

He was No 1 fan and supporter of Seamus Power and took great pride that his adored late wife Celia was the person who introduced Seamus Power to golf.

John attended the 30th Anniversary celebrations on Sunday 3rd September where he enjoyed a pleasant reunion of many of his colleagues and of course his hero Seamus Power who honoured us with his attendance.

He was a great character, talented singer/musician, wonderful sportsman and kind person. His large presence will be missed in West Waterford.

We extend our sympathy to his son Andrew, daughter Saranne and extended family who will miss him dearly. May John rest in peace.

Michael Cass

Captain

Winter Rules Amendment

An amendment has been made to the Winter Rules already in play. In order to protect the course over the winter months as much as possible, players are now asked to tee up the ball when placing as follows:

  • place on a tee within 6 inches on Fairway & Rough.
  • Bunkers: Rake and place within 6 inches
  • If bunker is waterlogged, free drop at nearest point of relief not nearer the hole
  • Buggies are not permitted on the course until further notice

Rugby Fever in West Waterford!

A wonderful evening took place in the clubhouse on Friday 6th October. Former Ireland Rugby International, Mike Ross, ably interviewed by Pat Mulcahy, gave some very interesting (and humorous!) insight into what it takes to make it as a rugby international. Mike also set the scene for the Ireland v Scotland match taking place the following day and we all now know that his confidence was well placed after another super win. Some delicious finger food was served up by Clodagh and Jason on the night and a great night was had by all. Thank you to Brian Hilliard for organising the event.

Women’s Notes

Eithne Ashby Reigns Supreme in Golfer of the Year:  We kicked off on the 13th April with the Golfer of the Year competition and some 24 competitions later on the 8th October only four points separated the top four!  Throughout the season Eithne Ashby has been very consistent but the other three players Jean O Donovan, Jean Conway and Mary Lou Carroll were always lurking in the high grass! In fact Jean O Donovan came storming into second place today when she returned a very good 35 points today.  Congratulations to Eithne on a superb achievement.  Thanks to all the players who made this competition so exciting.

Jean O Donovan on a Winning Streak:  Jean O Donovan played great golf on Sunday to win the last 18 hole competition of the year sponsored by Aston Crean  Playing off 29 Jean brought in a score of 35 points.  In second place we had Jean Conway who had 34 points playing off 23.  Jean must have gained a few pointers from her attendance at the Ryder Cup last weekend!  Beaten on the countback we had Denise Nugent also playing off 23 who returned a solid score of 34 points.  Well done to all the prizewinners

Fun Scramble Moves to Wednesday:  As the evenings are closing in the Fun scramble has been moved to Wednesday morning.  I played last week and congratulations to the hot shot winners  Jim Moroney, Eddie Stack and Reena Landers.  Not far off the pace we had Michael Cass, Joe Keane and Phil Kelly. The scramble gets underway at 11am.  Remember nine holes of good craic all the way round!

Rugby Legend Speaks in West Waterford:  I was so disappointed to miss out on a brilliant night in West Waterford on Friday night when rugby legend Mike Ross addressed members and visitors.  Brian Hilliard organised the night and from what I have heard I missed a super night.  Well Done to the Food Doc for providing lovely “bites” after the talk!

The Late John R Walsh:  I was sorry to hear on Sunday afternoon of the passing of John Walsh, Skehacrine.  A former colleague of mine, John was an integral part of West Waterford . He attended our 30th Birthday celebrations just one month ago.  John was a wonderful Club person and will be missed around West Waterford.  I extend our sincere sympathy to his family.
