Fourball Matchplay Final

Patrick Power & Colin Power bt Phil Kinsella & Percy Walsh 2&1

Due to the heavy rain that has fallen in the last few weeks, it was decided to introduce Winter Rules (see below for details) for this week’s competitions. There was no play on Saturday, but on Sunday Liam Leahy, one of West Waterford’s more consistent Winter golfers, was the winner with a super score of 30pts.

The final of the Fourball Matchplay was also played on Sunday. After a titanic battle, the father and son combination of Patrick and Colin Power got the better of the two wily competitors, Phil Kinsella and Percy Walsh. Congratulations to Patrick and Colin on a fine win.

Winter Rules In Play!

Due to the inclement weather, Winter Rules are now in play as follows:

  • place within 6 inches on Fairway & Rough
  • Bunkers: Rake and place within 6 inches
  • If bunker is waterlogged, free drop at nearest point of relief not nearer the hole
  • Buggies are not permitted on the course until further notice

Women’s Notes

What a weekend of Golf!  They say that sitting for a long period on a long haul flight is dangerous.  We are advised to get up and walk around.  Well after the last three days of sitting on the couch watching all the wonderful action from the Ryder Cup in Rome I better watch out for those DVTs!  It was a fabulous performance by 12 super players.  Congratulations Team Europe!  Roll on 2027 when we all hope to get a bit closer to the action down in Adare Manor!

Mary Curran Scores in the September 9 Hole:  One of the most hardworking and efficient members on the Ladies Committee is our Treasurer Mary Curran.  It was lovely to see Mary win the September 9 hole with 35 points playing off 18.  Mary beat the Sponsor of the competition Reena McDonnell who had 33 points playing off 24.  Reena is a force to be reckoned with as she zooms around the course in her trusty buggy!  In third the very consistent Jean O Donovan had 32 points playing off 14.  Well done Ladies

Jackie Manning Gets a Hole in One!  Most players go through a lifetime of golf without managing a hole in one.  Not so Jackie Manning.  Recently Jackie aced the rather daunting Par 3 which is Hole Four on our course.  Surrounded by bunkers and water on the right Jackie just fired down a drive straight into the hole.  Well Done Jackie.

West Waterford Success in Carlow Classic:  Recently  Tomas and Marie T  Curran, Mary Lou Carroll and Denis Looby travelled to Carlow to play in the very popular three day Carlow Classic, an annual event that attracts a big entry from all over Ireland. Played over three days over three courses Carlow, Bunclody and Mount Wolsey the West Waterford quartet came away with the Best Mixed Team title! Well Done

Junior Alliance Success:  At the recent outing to Slievenamon to play in the Junior Alliance West Waterford produced two players for the podium, namely Marian Hilliard and Jean O Donovan.  There are usually between 70 and 100 players so this was no mean achievement.  Wishing all our West Waterford players every success for the upcoming rounds.

Mary Fahy heads to Headford!  On behalf of our Lady Captain Nora Flynn I would like to wish Mary Fahy all the best as she travels to Headford Golf Club in Kells Co Meath to play in the final of the Golfing Ireland Bronze medal competition.

Golfer of the Year down to the Wire!  The final 18 hole Golfer of the Year competition will be played on Thursday and Sunday this week.  Eithne Ashby enjoys a four point lead over Mary Lou Carroll while Jean Conway, who will be just back from the Ryder Cup and Jean O Donovan are in third place just one point adrift!   Good luck to all the players.  May your Drives be Long and your putts short! Watch next week’s Notes.

Tuesday Morning Fun Scramble:  As the evenings are closing in the Fun scramble has been moved to Tuesday morning.  The scramble gets underway at 11am so if you are at a loose end why not come out and play nine holes.  Great fun guaranteed and the prizes on offer are very special!

What’s On this Week!

Tues Morning – 11am Mixed Fun Scramble Simply amazing prizes

Thurs Oct 5th or Sun Oct 8th – 18 Hole Stableford sponsored by Aston Crean
