President’s Prize 2023
Last weekend saw the holding of this year’s President’s Prize. I’m sure all will agree that our popular President, Jim Moroney, has done fantastic work for the club this year. Unfortunately, the weather last weekend wasn’t brilliant but it didn’t stop the following prize winners from returning some excellent scores. Congratulations to all!

Ryder Cup Raffle – only 6 days left to get your ticket!!

The Prize includes tickets for every day at the Ryder Cup including the Opening Ceremony, five nights bed and breakfast in a city centre hotel and transfers to the course each day. Gale force winds greeted golfers this weekend for the August Monthly Medal, added to soft ground conditions after all the recent rain, resulting in difficult course conditions. This didn’t stop Declan Spelman from carding a very creditable 39pts and taking first prize. Just beaten into second was big hitting Cork man Cormac Cullinane. Kieran Lynch continued his recent run of good form by taking the gross with Ring man Tom Breathnach taking third. Congrats to all men!

Countdown to Lady Captain’s Prize! Next Friday and Saturday the pinnacle of the Golf season will take place when our Lady Captain Nora Flynn presents her Lady Captain’s Prize. Played in stroke format the competitors will be well tested and the competition is always fierce. The draw for partners will take place on Wednesday evening. If you want to play you have to have your name on the list! On behalf of all the members we wish Nora the very best for the weekend.
Fine scoring in Mna Eile qualifier: There was a great turnout for the August qualifier of the Mna Eile. We extend our thanks to all the golfers who travelled to play. Clubs represented included Castlemartyr, Milltown, Mount Juliet, Slievenamon, Lismore, Tramore, Faithlegg and Clonmel. Special thanks to our near neighbours in Dungarvan Golf Club and the Gold Coast who turned out in great numbers.
On the day it was Lismore Castlemartyr and West Waterford who shared the honours. Betty Joyce playing off 13 had a very fine score of 39 points which was equalled by our own Jo Swayne playing off 21. In third place we had Rose Morrissey Castlemartyr playing off 26 also with 39 points. Other qualifiers included Mary Buckley, Dungarvan, Marie T Curran, West Waterford, Helen Walsh, Mount Juliet, Bridget Walsh, The Gold Coast, Inseun Kim The Gold Coast, Phil Whyte, Slievenamon, Elizabeth Moloney, Castlemartyr, Grace Hayes, Dungarvan, Vera Harding, Faithlegg. The next qualifier will take place on Thursday 7th September with the Final scheduled for Sunday 17th September.
Marie Curran tops the lot in the July 9 Hole: Kindly sponsored by Jean O Donovan the ongoing July 9 hole competition attracted a great entry. Marie Curran is playing lovely golf at the moment and was a worthy winner with 37 points playing off 16. Our Lady Captain Nora Flynn playing off 15 placed second with 36 points while Mary Donnelly playing off 11 had a good 35 points.
Mixed Foursomes Friday! On Friday last the fairways in West Waterford were packed with Mixed foursomes groups playing in a Mixed Foursomes competition kindly sponsored by Tirlain. There were some interesting draws and there was much speculation as to who would win. In the end Niall Colleran and Geraldine Curran emerged the winners with a nett 70 just pipping Patrick Power and Frances Carroll who had a nett 71. The competition was a great success and there are plans for more foursomes in the next number of weeks.
Dalton Jewellers Singles Matchplay: The Dalton Jewellers Singles Matchplay will get underway in August. Please put your name down on the list to play.
Club Outing Woodenbridge: On Friday August 25th the West Waterford Ladies head off to Woodenbridge Golf Club in Wicklow for a little golf and relaxation! Numbers must be finalised this weekend. Please contact our Captain Nora Flynn

Junior Academy News
These are busy times for our Junior Academy! On Tue 1st August a number of our Juniors travelled to Waterford Castle for round 4 of the Deise League. The weather was good and all the boys enjoyed the experience. A big thank you to all the parents who travelled to Waterford for this event.
The biggest day in the Junior Calendar will take place on Tue 8th August. Our Co-Junior Captains, Peter Cummins and Brian Curran, will host the 2023 Junior Captain’s Prize. This year is even more special as the winner will be presented with the Pat Murphy Perpetual Trophy in honour of Pat’s service to the club down through the years. It promises to be a great occasion for all!
Then on Thursday, our cadets will travel to Clonmel GC for the 2nd round of the Golf Sixes League. The competition begins at 3 o’clock and parents are asked to be in Clonmel by 2.30pm.

FBD Insurance Open Qualifier Series
Our FBD sponsored Open Series for Ladies and Gents continues every Wednesday and Friday throughout the Summer. The final takes place on Friday September 15th with a trip to Trump Doonbeg, Dromoland Castle and Galway Bay for the overall winner.
