Ladies Notes
Scintillating Performance by Jo Swayne! Last Friday and Saturday Nora Flynn hosted her Lady Captain’s Prize. The weather Gods kept the rain away and the standard of golf was outstanding. Usually going out in the leading group on Day 2 does generate a little nervous tension but this was not the case with Jo Swayne! Jo was leader in the Clubhouse on Friday evening with a lovely score of 69 playing off 20. However on Saturday Jo turned on “The Burners” and scorched round returning a score of 62 nett! Given that the conditions were windy this was truly a wonderful performance. Congratulations to Jo on winning her first Lady Captain’s Prize. The first of many me thinks!
Jean O Donovan has been playing superb golf this year and on Day 2 brought in a score of 68 nett playing off (25). Jean’s total of 144 slotted her in to second place. Mary Lou Carroll is never far from the Podium and played solid golf over the two days to win the gross prize with 185 playing off (20). Third place was won by June Whyte who also played consistent golf playing off (19) with a score of 149 nett. Mary Fahy has been having a super year and playing off (29) had a 150 nett to take fourth place just pipping former Lady Captain’s Prize winner Marie T Curran playing off (23) who also had a 150 nett to take fifth place.
Denise Nugent is regaining some of her old form and won Cat A (0-23) with a score of 153 nett playing off 22. In the Cat B section (24-29) Jean Conway was the deserving winner playing off (24) with a 151 nett. Former Lady Captain Marie Curran won Cat C (30-36) with a nett 152 playing off (31) while Trish O Shea, another player enjoying a fine season won the Cat D (37-54) with a nett score of 160 playing off (36)
Ger Curran playing off (32) had a great round on Friday and took the prize for Best Friday with a nett score of 72. Ciara Donnelly playing off (27) turned round a bad start on Friday to return a score of 72 nett on Saturday to win Best Saturday. The hotly contested Past Captain’s Prize was won by the always consistent Eithne Ashby playing off (25) with a nett score of 155, while the Committee Prize went to the hardworking Get into Golf co-ordinator Una Mulligan playing off (25) with a nett 153
One of the loudest cheers of the night went up for Reena McDonnell who won the 9 hole competition and who entertained us royally with her acceptance speech!. Rosie Murphy, Lady Captain of the Gold Coast won the Visitors prize while the men were not left out and Diarmuid Horgan was a worthy winner of the Mens 9 hole competition. In the Get into Golf Section Marcella Scanlon was a deserving winner.
There may have been two consecutive days of stroke play but the moves on the dance floor later in the evening were a sight to behold! We had a fabulous evening and special thanks must go the Jason and Clodagh from the Food Doc who produced a really lovely meal for all present at the Presentation. Well Done to our Lady Captain Nora. The weekend was sensational.
Golfer of the Year Hotting Up! Certainly things are getting interesting in the Golfer of the Year competition. Jean O Donovan has swept to the top of the leader board following a good two days on the fairways in the Lady Captain’s Prize. Her total points to date are 358 while Mary Lou Carroll is in second place with 352 points just one ahead of Jean Conway. There are others “lurking in the high grass” so there should be a very interesting climax to the competition in late September!
Play in Pink Raises over €800! On Sunday last the Play in Pink competition raised over €800 in donations. In the 18 hole competition Una Mulligan played outstanding golf to return a score of 42 points playing off (26). In second place we had Trish O Shea playing off (36) with 33 points who played some nice golf while our very efficient Lady Vice Captain Bridget Blackwell had 32 points playing off (28). In the 9 hole section Jackie Manning playing off (18) returned a fine score of 22 points. Mary French playing off (17) placed some nice golf to finish second while the third slot was filled by Marian Hilliard another regular prize-winner. Many thanks to all the members who contributed so generously to this very worthy cause.

Junior Academy News
On Tuesday 8th August, this year’s Junior Captain’s Prize took place. 2023 Junior Co-Captains, Peter Cummins and Brian Curran, held two competitions on the day. The main competition, for the Pat Murphy Perpetual Trophy, was contested by our Juniors with official golf handicap indexes. In what was typical ‘soft Irish mist’, some wonderful scoring was witnessed. In the end, the winner was young Anthony O’Donnell with a score of 42pts, just beating David Prendergast and Ted Lynch into 2nd and 3rd place respectively, both with scores of 41pts. Conor Keane took home the gross prize with a very creditable 24pts. Pat Murphy himself was on hand to present his trophy and said a few very nice words to the young golfers. A nine hole competition for Juniors who don’t have an official HI yet was won by Sean Houlihan with a super score of 25pts. Congratulations to all the winners on the day. A big thank you to Pat Murphy for sponsoring this competition. A big thank you also to Gents Captain Michael Cass who was present throughout the day supporting the boys, and who also had some nice words of encouragement for them at the presentation ceremony. All in all, the day went off smoothly and was enjoyed by all present.
Then, on Thursday 10th August, six of our cadets travelled to Clonmel GC for round 2 of the league. West Waterford was represented very ably by Tara O’Donnell, Maebh O’Connell, Anthony O’Donnell, Jack O’Connell and the twins Daniel and Jayden Murphy. Thank you to all the parents and mentors who travelled to Clonmel on the day. Next up is Dundrum on 21st August for round 3.
