Gents Results

13 Hole Club Singles S’ford

1st Liam Leahy (16) 34pts

2nd Luke Swayne (13) 30pts

More rain during the week curtailed play once again. We are all looking forward to better weather and Summer rules at this stage! The rain resulted in only 13 holes being open for the weekly competition. The soft ground conditions didn’t bother Liam Leahy however, who returned an amazing score of 34pts. This meant a comfortable 4 shot victory over Luke Swayne who returned a very commendable 30pts. Congratulations to both men.

Winter League Semi-finals

Lions v Cheetahs; Wolves v Leopards

The Winter League Semi-finals continued this week, but arranging matches with the bad weather is proving to be a challenge. At the time of writing there are still a small number of matches outstanding and the Winter League Committee will decide on Monday 27th how to proceed in conjunction with the 4 team Captains, and this will be communicated on the WhatsApp group. Great credit is due to the Captains and their teams for their efforts in trying to get matches completed and we thank them for their patience.

Ladies Club News

Winter League Showdown!  It will be like the battle of the OK Coral next Sunday in West Waterford as the inform teams battle it out in the final of the Winter League.  At the time of going to Press the Hybrids captained by Una Mulligan and the Right Hookers captained by Joan Sheehan are in close contention.  However they may only be the pacemakers in the final as the Pitchers captained by Suzanne Dalton and the Drivers captained by Trish O Shea have played a waiting game throughout the last three months. The timesheet is open from 12.30 to 2.00.  Please get your name on the timesheet.  The Presentation will take place that evening.  It should be a very busy affair as the Men are also playing the final of their Winter League.

What’s Happening this week!  A 16 hole Singles competition runs from 16th March to Thursday 6th April.  There is also an ongoing 9 hole competition running.

Get into Golf: The weather conditions have been difficult for all players but it is especially difficult when you are starting out in golf.  Special mention must go to Heather and Teresa who played last Sunday in pretty miserable conditions but returned very nice scores.  Hopefully in the next few weeks we will see established players out on the fairways with our Get into Golf ladies.  Upwards and Onwards!

Inter Club Teams:  Teams have been selected and even though the weather has been a spoilsport, players are out practicing. The various Team Captains have formed panels but the actual teams have not been announced.  One of the first teams to play will be the Challenge Cup team who play Faithlegg in Faithlegg on Saturday 8th April.

Golf Lessons:  If you feel your golf game needs a little tweaking or you are new to the game the good news is that Aaron Crotty intends running a four week programme for group lessons in the near future.  The maximum number in each group will be 6 and it will cost €10 per lesson.  Please give your name to Una Mulligan if you are interested in participating

Junior Academy

After a couple of cancellations in the previous weeks, our Stage 3, 4 and 5 Juniors finally got their season started on Sat 25th. This was just a warmup day for the more serious competition once the active season starts. Despite the soft underfoot conditions and the bit of understandable rustiness, some excellent shots were hit by the young golfers. The Junior Leaders present were certainly very impressed. Our next day out for this group is Tuesday 4th April, but before that we will have our J1 and J2’s out on Saturday evening 1st April. Keep an eye on WhatsApp groups for further information.

Entries are flying in for the Adult/Junior Matchplay competition, but places are still available so make sure to enter if you can. Closing date is Friday March 31st.

Seamus Power News

My heart sank last Thursday evening as Seamus Power’s great effort in the WGC – Dell Technologies Match Play event played in the Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas came to a shuddering halt!  Seamus was playing Adam Scott in the first round and despite leading at various stages Seamus had to watch a fluky 35 foot putt from Scott on the 18th go into the hole which clinched the all important point..  Seamus won his next match against Adam Hadwin.  In the third match Seamus just gave way on the 18th to the inform Sam Burns.  Now all we have to do is count down the days to the Masters in Augusta which gets underway on April 6th.  Good Luck Seamus.

Save the Date!
