The late Willie Lyons

As members gathered for the Sunday morning competition we learned of the sad passing of our dear friend and long-time club member Willie Lyons. For over twenty years Willie exemplified all the qualities of a true clubman and friend. He appreciated the friendliness and companionship he enjoyed in West Waterford, in his own words, “Where else would you get it.”  From the outset he showed an eagerness to become involved in club activities. Having joined the men’s committee, he was elected President in 2005, and in 2018 he was honoured with the position of club captain. He always took an active part in fundraising activities and was generous with his sponsorship of club events.  Willie wore the green jacket with pride and promoted West Waterford far and wide. On the golfing side he enjoyed the bi-weekly fourball with his long-time partners Brendan, Michael and John. When it came to club outings at home or overseas Willie’s name was always at the top of the list. We will miss the smile and kind word as we share the treasured memories. We extend our sympathies to his loving wife Geraldine, daughter Sharon and the extended family.  Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

June Classic sponsored by AerHaus not to be missed:  Starting on Bank Holiday Monday June 5th and running through to Sunday June 11th the June Classic is certainly worth entering.  With over €2,500 in prizes the entry fee is €90 per team of three. It will be played in a scramble format with individual drives counting on all the par threes. Four drives from each team member must be used throughout the round. West Waterford is playing superbly at the moment, so this is your opportunity to come out and play. Please phone 058 43216 to book a tee time or visit www.westwaterfordgolf.com.    Many thanks to our generous sponsor AerHaus.

No Luck for Ladies’ Teams: Lady Luck must have been on holidays this week as both the Intermediate team who played Cahir Park in Cahir Park and the Minor team who played Tramore in Tramore had no success, albeit against strong opposition in both matches.  On behalf of our Lady Captain Nora Flynn, I would like to thank all the players and caddies who gave up their time to represent the Club.  Roll on 2024.
