Weekly News Jun 4th 2023
West Waterford Set Fair for AerHaus June Classic: As we enter the second week of beautiful weather West Waterford Golf Club is looking forward to our Annual Club Classic which commenced on the Bank Holiday Monday June 4th and runs through to Sunday next June 11th. West Waterford is looking really well and thanks to Morrie Ferncombe and his staff the course is playing really super. The volunteer teams have also been hard at work ensuring that the course is looking pristine for this prestigious event which usually attracts a number of visiting teams.
This year AerHaus have come on board as Sponsors. With over €2,500 in prizes the entry fee is €90 per team of three which can be Gents, Ladies or Mixed. Re-entry is just €15 per player. The competition will be in a scramble format with individual drives counting on all the par threes. Four drives from each team member must be used throughout the round. Please phone 058 43216 to book a teetime or visit www.westwaterfordgolf.com.

Ladies Notes
Busy Times in Ladies Golf: On Sunday next the first major of our season will take place with the Captain’s Prize to the Ladies. We would like to thank our esteemed Captain Michael Cass for putting up the prize. This competition is always hotly contested. Please ensure that you have your name up as the draw for partners will take place on Thursday night.
Ger Curran on a Winning Streak: On Thursday last the June Qualifier of the Mná Eile series took place. The conditions were fantastic, and Ger Curran burned up the course returning a great score of 43 points playing off 34. In second we had Frances Mellerick from Castlemartyr who brought in a great score of 41 points playing off 29. In third we had another West Waterford player Geraldine Hickey playing off 35 with an excellent 39 points. Other qualifiers for the September final included Betty Joyce, Lismore, Joanne Hartley, New Ross, Jean O Donovan WW, Ciara Donnelly WW, Marian Hilliard WW, Nora Flynn WW, Fidelma Fitzgerald, Dungarvan, Bridget Blackwell WW and Delia Smith WW.
Ger Shows the way in the Coolcormack Residents competition: Over the week-end the Coolcormack Residents very kindly sponsored an 18 hole competition for Gents and Ladies. There is no stopping Ger Curran at the moment and despite being cut a shot after her win on Thursday Ger played super golf to return a score of 44 points playing off her new handicap of 33. In second place Mary Fahey kept the flag flying for the ladies with a fabulous score of 43 points playing off 34. Well done ladies.
Jean Conway does it again! At the conclusion of the May ongoing 9 hole competition kindly sponsored by Mary Herlihy, regular winner Jean Conway emerged a worthy winner. Playing off 11 Jean had a score of 43 points. In second place it was nice to see Rena Landers on the podium. Rena had 39 points playing off 16. Kathleen Broderick is also playing fine golf at the moment. Kathleen filled the third spot with 35 points playing of 18.
Golfer of the Year: It will be September when the Golfer of the Year is announced but our new format whereby all 18 hole competitions count for GOY points is very interesting. The best 10 scores will be counted to determine the winner. At the early stages Jean Conway has a one point lead from Eithna Ashby who in turn is closely followed by Mary Lou Carroll. There is a long way to go but the results are interesting especially as some of us are striving to even get on the League Table! You have to have 30 points!

The weekend competition this week was kindly sponsored by the Coolcormuck Valley Residents and golfers showed their appreciation by turning out in large numbers in the lovely summer sunshine. The course was in immaculate condition, with the greens running fast and true. Two ladies outshone the rest when the final results came in. Ger Curran was being very secretive with her score in the clubhouse on Saturday evening and it’s no wonder! A superb 44pts saw her pip Mary Fahey by just 1pt!! Both ladies deserve great credit as they lapped the field, so to speak, finishing 5 and 4pts clear of 3rd place respectively. Congratulations to Ger and Mary, and all the winners. All in all, the Coolcormuck Residents can be very pleased with their competition in the sunshine.
