Ladies Notes

Phil Kelly is off to the Moorings!  Last week our Club competition was very kindly sponsored by the Moorings restaurant.  Phil Kelly had a great run on Thursday returning a winning score of 39 points playing off 29.  Phil puts in a huge amount of work as Competitions secretary so it is a well deserved victory.  In second place we had the up and coming Patricia O Shea who playing off 37 had a nice score of 32 points.  Beaten on the countback we had the winner of last year’s Lady Captain’s prize Geraldine Hickey who is coming into form at just the right time.  Geraldine also had 32 points playing off 35.

Junior Foursomes:  It was a lovely sunny afternoon on Sunday in the Gold Coast when our Junior Foursomes team went out to play the Gold Coast at home.  The West Waterford team of June Whyte, Denise Nugent, Mary Lou Carroll, Eithna Ashby, Jean Connolly and Jo Swayne played well but on the day were beaten by a good Gold Coast side.

Away Ties for West Waterford Teams:  On Saturday evening next May 27th the Intermediate team from West Waterford play Cahir Park in Cahir Park.  On Sunday our Minor team travel to Tramore to play Tramore in their second round match.  We wish both teams the very best of luck.

Junior Academy News

Our Junior days continued on Saturday evening 20th May where 18 Juniors teed it up in the lovely summer sunshine. J3’s got more scores for their handicaps in preparation for the start of our Junior Golfer of the year competitions in June, and J2’s played 5 holes continuing their practice for the Golf Sixes coming up later in the summer. Great fun was had by all!

One of our J5’s, Leo Mulhall, injured his elbow in a hurling match during the week. All in the Junior Academy wish Leo a speedy recovery and no doubt we’ll see him back on the fairways before too long.

Seamus and Gary News

Seamus teed it up in the second major of the year, the PGA Championship, held at Oak Hill Country Club in New York. Unfortunately, Seamus’ run of making cuts in majors came to an end and he struggled to rounds of 75 and 74 on the brutal course to miss out by 4 shots. Brooks Koepka returned to his major winning ways, capturing his 5th overall in what was a real coup for the LIV golf tour.

Seamus is taking a break next week but will probably return to action the following week for the Memorial Tournament.

FBD Insurance Open Qualifier Series

Our FBD sponsored Open Series for Ladies and Gents continues every Wednesday and Friday throughout the Summer. The final takes place on Friday September 15th with a trip to Trump Doonbeg, Dromoland Castle and Galway Bay for the overall winner.
