Comeragh Oil Winter League Final

Wolves def Cheetahs 5-3

The winter league began in November last year and after 6 months of rain interrupted play the end finally came on Sunday 23rd April. Eddie Stack’s Wolves emerged victorious over Pat Curran’s Cheetahs in what was a very close contest. In fact, in what was a fitting end to such a long league, the outcome wasn’t known until the 18th hole of the very last match! In what was a high quality and tight encounter, Kieran Lynch of the Wolves defeated Andy Hickey of the Cheetahs on the very last hole to secure the victory for his team. Congratulations to Eddie and his Wolves on being league champions, and also to Pat and his Cheetahs for battling hard to the end.

Gents Fixtures

Tue 25-Apr: Topline Currans Open 9-hole Singles

Sat/Sun 29/30: Tirlán 18-hole Open Singles Mixed

Wed 4-May: FBD Insurance 18-hole Summer Series

Note: When entering for a competition, please check to see the rules of the competition in-play. Placing on the fairway may be removed later in the week if dry weather continues.

Gents Inter-Club

For the second year in a row, a strong looking Pierce Purcell team travelled to Williamstown GC on Saturday 22nd April. However, like last year, home advantage was to prove crucial and our team went down fighting to their Williamstown counterparts. On behalf of team captains Niall Colleran and Noel Conway, thank you to all who put themselves forward to play. It is greatly appreciated.

Ladies Notes – West Waterford

Bridget Broderick the Best of the Pack!  On Thursday the K Sports Waterford very kindly sponsored our 18 Hole competition.  On the day Bridget Broderick was a worthy winner playing steady golf throughout the 18 holes.  In second we had our busy Handicap Secretary Jean O Donovan who is playing very solid golf at the moment, while it was lovely to see Eithna Ashby back on the podium finishing in third place.  A threesome to watch over the Summer months!  Many thanks to K Sports for their sponsorship.

Fun Scramble:  On Monday evening last we had a fine turnout for our fun scramble. Following a shot gun start over the first nine holes, Liam Hansbury, Joe Keane and Rena Landers emerged the winners.  In second place we had Denis Looby, Pat Drummy and Mary Curran.  Richie O Gorman, Dave Walsh and Mary Fahy filled the third spot.  This is a very sociable event and I would recommend members to come out and play.  The scramble format suits all players and it is a fun way to play golf!

Inter Club Teams:  On Saturday our Mixed Team are drawn against Faithlegg playing in Faithlegg.  Matches kick off at 2pm so why not come down and support the team.  .

Thursday 27th April or Monday 1st May –  9 Hole Stableford – for Handicap

Junior Academy

The big news this week for the Junior Academy was the announcement of our Fred Daly Team. The five boys travel to Co. Tipperary GC (Dundrum) on Sunday 30th April at 2.30pm where they will play the Dundrum team. It is the first time in a number of years that West Waterford is being represented in the Fred Daly competition, and it would be great to see some supporters from the club travel to support the boys.

Gary Hurley News

Gary Hurley played in the ISPS Handa Championship in Japan last week. The course looked superb on TV. On the first day Gary had a lovely 67 which left him tied for 20th place. Unfortunately the second round proved to be more difficult and Gary returned a score of 75 which meant an early finish. Gary will remain in the Far East to play in the Korean Championship next week and is then set to return to play in the DP Tour in Europe over the Summer months.
