Our first competition of the year with full Summer rules was played at the weekend. After a winter of placing the ball, it was a shock to the system for golfers to have to suddenly play the ball as it lies, especially in the rough and around the green. This didn’t prevent young Jack Mulligan from returning an excellent 39pts in the difficult conditions. A special word of mention must go to Philip Spratt also, who shot an outstanding score of level par gross. Congratulations to Jack, Philip and all the winners.
Fun Scramble – Past and present Presidents Feature! The Monday night fun scramble is proving to be a great success. Last Monday Denis Looby went one better with his team of former Club President Diarmuid Horgan and the excellent golfer Stella Kinsella to take the first prize. The current President Jim Moroney teamed up with the always consistent Mary Lou Carroll and a lady who is playing plenty of good golf at the moment Mairead Criostoir to take second place. Well done

Ladies Notes – West Waterford
All Set for Mna Eile Series: On Thursday the first competition of the Mna Eile series takes place in West Waterford. This very popular competition has been running for a number of years and is very popular with both visitors and members alike. The qualifiers will run on the first Thursday of May, June, July, August and September with the final scheduled for Sunday 17th September. .Inter Club Teams – Minors get to Play at Home; On Tuesday evening our Minor Cup team play Clonmel. The matches tee off at 2pm. If you are free why not come out and cheer on the ladies. The Challenge cup team hope to continue their winning streak when they play Cahir Park in West Waterford on Sunday May 14th and on Saturday May 27th our Intermediate team have their first outing against Cahir Park in Cahir Park. .

Junior Academy News
On Sunday 30th April, five young golfers from West Waterford travelled to Dundrum in County Tipperary to play the Fred Daly Trophy against the home team. The team of Conor Keane, Leo Mulhall, Adam Mulligan, Conor Lynch and Anthony O’Donnell looked resplendent in their new West Waterford club gear. As they each lined up prior to each match it was obvious that Dundrum had an older and bigger team. This experience and home course knowledge was to prove decisive, but our brave young boys battled all the way, eventually going down 4-1 in matches. Despite the loss, a great day was had by all. The team, along with their parents and mentors, were made to feel very welcome by Dundrum and all matches were played in an excellent spirit. We wish Dundrum the best of luck for the next round.
On the home front, a large number of juniors and cadets turned out on Saturday evening for the golf. It’s great to see the numbers picking up as the year goes on. The next day will be Saturday 6th May and all are welcome.
FBD Insurance Open Qualifier Series West Waterford are delighted to announce a new collaboration with FBD Insurance as they have generously agreed to sponsor a new competition in West Waterford open to Visitors and Members. It is open to Ladies and Men who hold an WCH golf handicap and will run every Wednesday and Friday. The final takes place on Friday September 15th with a very interesting first prize. You will get to play in Trump Doonbeg, Dromoland Castle and Galway Bay. The prize includes accommodation. West Waterford are very grateful to FBD Insurance for their generous sponsorship.
Calling All Golfers and Sports Fans – Do you want to go to the Ryder Cup? . For a mere €25 you and whoever you wish to bring along can go to the Ryder Cup EVERY day including the Opening Ceremony! The Ryder Cup takes place in Rome from Thursday 28th September to Sunday 1st October. The package includes 5 nights Bed and Breakfast in an NH hotel in Rome, a Season ticket to the Ryder Cup including the Opening Ceremony, transfer to the course each day and a Flight voucher valued €500. A little bird told me that our former Gents Captain, Edward Hickey, is preparing hard for comeback to the game following knee replacement. Edward was even spotted getting some high altitude training in, at Mahon Falls recently! We all wish Edward a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the fairways soon.
