Sunshine, Smiles and a Nail-Biting Finish for Delia’s Big Weekend
On Friday and Saturday last, we celebrated our Lady Captain, Delia Smith, as she presented her Lady Captain’s Prize. The weekend got underway on Thursday evening, when her ladies committee gathered to prepare the clubhouse — and to partake in a few refreshments of course! Friday itself kicked off with excitement, expectation and no shortage of speculation, with plenty of cards being kept close to their chest. When it all washed out, experience carried the day, with Marie T Curran leading the way from Mary Lou Carroll and Joan Sheehan. After the usual round of post-mortems, some quiet self-reflection, and a little frustration vented out on a sun-kissed balcony, the ladies headed home for an early night — with some hopes, fresh expectations, and perhaps the odd prayer for a faltering leader or two.
Saturday brought another perfect day for golf, and the scoring didn’t disappoint. As the final groups came off the 18th, talk of new leaders and big back-nine scores took over as the main topic of conversation on the balcony. In the end, it all came down to the 18th hole, where Mary Lou Carroll claimed a fantastic double for the Carroll family — with sister Frances having already landed the President’s Prize just a few weeks earlier. Mary Lou’s excellent final total of 139 nett saw her pip Geraldine Hickey (140 nett) and Bridget Blackwell (140 nett) to the title.
At the prize-giving, following a beautiful Lady Captain’s dinner, all the prize-winners took a moment to recognise Delia’s wonderful contribution to our club — both as Lady Captain, and for her outstanding work with our Junior Club over the last four years. It’s probably fair to say that the biggest cheer and longest speech of the night was reserved for the remarkable Reena McDonnell, who at 89 years (she is not shy about her age), captured the ladies 9-hole competition. Reena just proves you are never too old to be competitive. So, ladies, you always have another chance next year.

Ladies, because of demand, we are running one more qualifier day for the Ladies Mná Eile Grand Final. So, if you haven’t yet qualified, or missed out on previous qualifying rounds, or have a Monday – Friday job responsibilities, this is your opportunity ….. its on a Saturday 22nd August. So, book in quickly, as times are filling up fast.
‘Play in Pink’ adds Blue — Everyone’s Invited This Sunday
This coming Sunday, 23rd August, we’ll be holding our annual fundraiser for this great cause. This year, we’re extending the reach to the men of the club too, with the introduction of “Play in Blue” — we are extending this to play in blue to help raiser recognition and support for men’s cancer too.
The event will be a 3-person, 18-hole mixed scramble, and it’s semi-open, so bring along a friend or two for a fun day out. Just add your name to the timesheet on BRS, and we’ll do a draw for partners. There’s no set entry fee — all we ask is that you make a donation to this wonderful cause. So come along next Sunday, support a cause that touches so many of us, and enjoy a great day out on the course.
Play in Pink is the golf fundraising initiative of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI), supported by Golf Ireland and Lady Captains at clubs across the country for over two decades. Last year, more than 230 clubs across Ireland took part, together raising €810,000 for the charity, with all funds going directly toward breast cancer research. With 1 in 7 Irish women diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 75, it’s a cause that touches so many families — and one our own club is proud to get behind.
Friday Evening Fun Scrambles!
Our Friday evening scramble resumes this week, so members, newcomers, get into golfers, come along and be part of a great social evening in the club— Friday evenings between 5:30pm and 6pm!
The Seanóirí will also continue at 10:30am each Monday, with entry just €5, including tea and coffee in the clubhouse afterwards. All members are warmly encouraged to take part.
