Junior Captain’s Weekend & Junior Family Fun Day
Last weekend, our Junior Captain, Rueben O’Brien, hosted his Junior Captain’s Prize, and what a weekend it turned out to be.
The Junior Captain’s Prize competition was played on Saturday afternoon, and it didn’t disappoint, with some really impressive scoring across the board. Corey Flynn took the overall honours with a superb 40pts, just holding off Joshua Cass on 38pts. Keelan Cotter picked up the gross prize with 32pts, while Tom Halpin and Conor Keane rounded out the top four in 3rd and 4th, both scoring 38pts. Well done to every junior who played — a great standard all round.
The fun kept going on Sunday for the Family Fun Day, and we couldn’t have asked for better conditions. The sun split the stones, the front lawns filled up with families, and our brilliant junior committee had no shortage of things to keep everyone entertained — the washing machine challenge, chipping and putting competitions, longest drive, and face painting all went down a treat. There was even a draw for a free set of junior golf clubs to keep the excitement going. Meanwhile, Athula and his team had the barbecue fired up all afternoon, dishing out great food, drinks and ice cream to keep the troops fed and happy.
A special mention has to go to our J4 and J5 juniors, who took charge of a 6-hole fun scramble for the J1, J2 and J3 groups — off they went around the course in their little groups, like a line of pied pipers leading the way.
Everyone made their way back Sunday evening for the Junior Captain’s and Fun Day prize-giving. Well done to Rueben for putting together such a brilliant weekend, and to Micheál Phelan, Phil, Janet and the rest of the junior committee for all their hard work behind the scenes. Thanks too to our Captains, Brian and Delia, for their part in making the day run so smoothly. A big thank you to Stephen Cass of Cass & Co, main sponsor of our Junior Club, and to Richie Queally, who kindly sponsored the set of clubs for the raffle.
And finally, thank you to all the parents and children who came along and helped make it such a memorable day — and weekend.

Ladies Captain’s Prize Weekend, presented by Delia Smith
In addition to all the other work Delia does in the club, this week she’s preparing to present her own Lady Captain’s Prize this coming Friday and Saturday. Delia is a very shy lady and doesn’t want me saying much about her here — but she goes about her role very diligently and efficiently, all the same. So, to Delia, we hope you get to sit back a little next weekend, celebrate your role and achievement in our golf club with your family, who are gathering from near and far, and hopefully you’ll enjoy the spotlight, even just a little.
To all the ladies, the weather forecast is looking kind, so you should get to enjoy some lovely conditions when you kick off next Friday afternoon for the first round.
The weekend schedule is as follows:
- Friday 14th August: 1st round of Lady Captain’s Prize (draw for partners), followed by a 9-hole competition for Ladies (book on BRS).
- Saturday 15th August: 2nd round of Ladies Captain’s Prize, followed by an 18-hole guests’ competition. From 3:30pm, there will be 9-hole competitions for Juniors and Gents.
Wishing all our fabulous ladies a fabulous golfing weekend ahead.
Open Week Results:
Our Open Week kicked off over the bank holiday weekend, and it’s been a busy week of competition, with lots of visitors getting to experience our wonderful golf course. Some of the feedback we picked up along the way:
“The best greens I’ve played on all year.” “What a beautiful location for a golf course.” “The best test of golf around.” “Course presented in fabulous condition.” “Lovely hospitality.”
Enough of the feedback — back to the serious business of the results!

Men’s South-East Golfer of the Year 2026 final at Tramore Golf Club
Well done to our handicap secretary, Liam O’Brien, who recently achieved 3rd place in the South-East Golf of the year competition, hosted by Tramore Golf Club.
All the recent practice over the Tramore golf course paid off … a little !
Hole in One
Unlike last year, there has been little activity on the ‘hole in one’ front this year, but then, like busses, two come along together. Well done to two of our ‘young guns’, Jack on Donnell, who got his on the 9th, and Conor Walsh, who achieved his on the 4th. Great achievement lads
Pierce Purcell Heartbreak.
Last Bank Holiday Monday, our Pierce Purcell team travelled to Tramore GC with high hopes of a pennant in the Munster East final. After an absorbing contest, the match finished 2-2, with a sudden death playoff required. However, lady luck was not on our side for a finish, when the lads from Cobh sank a huge putt on the 1st playoff hole to snatch the match. So near, but yet so far away. Well done to all our Pierce Purcell squad who have represented the club so well this year and creating a great buzz of excitement in the club with their journey.
Friday Evening Fun Scrambles!
After open week, our Friday evening scramble resumes next week, so members, newcomers, get into golfers, come along and be part of a great social evening in the club— Friday evenings between 5:30pm and 6pm!
The Seanóirí will also continue at 10:30am each Monday, with entry just €5, including tea and coffee in the clubhouse afterwards. All members are warmly encouraged to take part.
Club Matchplay
We are heading to the final rounds of the various club matchplay competitions now. However, there are a few slackers in the men’s plate and mixed foursomes’ competitions that need to get their matches completed urgently!. Any matches not completed in the coming days will be decided by toss of coin.
This week’s events:
- Tues 11th Aug.: Gents Tuesday Treats, open 9-hole stableford.
- Wed 12th / Fri 14th Aug: Al Eile Open 18 hole singles
- Fri 14th / Sat 15th Lady Captain’s Prize.
- Sun 16th Gents Club competition.
- Ladies August ongoing 9 hole, sponsored by June Whyte
