West Waterford Golf Club News – w/c 15th June 2025
Superb Turnout and Stunning Scores for Hanrahan’s Captain’s Prize at West Waterford
West Waterford Golf Club was in flying form on last Saturday, 14th June, as the men members gathered in large numbers for Shane Hanrahan’s Captain’s Prize Day — one of the highlights of the club’s calendar. Despite the poor weather forecast, the Brickey valley enjoyed some lovely sunshine and a gentle breeze throughout, conditions that were ideal for the weekend.
And the competition lived up to its billing. The course was presented in excellent condition, thanks to the tireless work of the greenkeeping staff, offering players a fair but testing challenge from start to finish.
When the scores were counted, it was Martin O’Driscoll who emerged as winner, posting a superb 63 nett to take the Captain’s Prize. Morrie Ferncombe followed closely behind with an impressive 68 nett, securing the runner-up spot. Meanwhile, one of the standout rounds of the day came from Luke Cummins, who claimed the gross prize with a remarkable 67 gross, playing off a handicap of +2 — a top-class performance.
Following the day’s play, members gathered at the clubhouse for the prize-giving. Captain Shane expressed his gratitude to all those who took part and supported the event, making it a truly memorable day for him and his family.
Another memorable Captain’s Day in West Waterford, a day that marks everything that makes West Waterford Golf Club special — community spirit, competitive golf, and a shared love for the game.

Double Delight, with Aces on the 4th
It was a remarkable week in the club last week, with not one but two hole-in-ones recorded on the par-3 4th hole. The first came on Monday, 9th June, when Margaret O’Sullivan aced the hole while competing in the club’s Mixed Foursomes. Just two days later, Seamus Lambers repeated the feat on Wednesday, on his way to victory in the Al Eile Weekly Open.
Congratulations to both Margaret and Seamus on their superb achievement — a rare and exciting double on one of the course’s signature holes!
