West Waterford Golf Club News – w/c 08th June 2025

West Waterford Golf Club is set for Shane Hanrahan’s Captain’s Prize Day, Sat., 14th June.

Excitement is building at the club for Shane Hanrahan’s Captain’s Prize, taking place this Saturday, 14th June. This event is one of the club’s most prestigious competitions of the year, will be played over 18 holes, white tees, in a stroke play format. The Captain’s Prize is always a standout date in the golfing calendar, bringing together a strong field of members for a day of competitive golf and great club spirit. With the course in superb condition, thanks to the great efforts of Morrie and the greenkeeping team, players can expect a fair but testing challenge across all 18 holes.

Following the day’s play, members will gather for the prize-giving and refreshments, at 8pm, rounding off what is sure to be an enjoyable and memorable occasion. Shane, who took on the captaincy earlier this year, and is looking forward to what promises to be a great day for all. We extend our best wishes to Shane, his family and friends on this very special and enjoyable of celebration of his Captaincy.

Best of luck to all participants – and may the best golfer come out on top!

Senior & Junior Scratch Cups, in association with Top Golfer Tour

Last Sunday, we hosted our Senior and Junior Scratch Cups in association with the Top Golfer Tour. The weather was particularly favourable, and the competition proved to be very close, with some superb scoring off the back tees.

The Senior Scratch Cup, kindly sponsored by Planet Blue Energy, was won by Seán Enright from Doneraile, representing Limerick Golf Club, who returned an excellent score of three under par (70). In second place was Mark Behan of Lee Valley Golf Club, who also carded a three under par 70 — matched by our own Luke Cummins, who has been playing outstanding golf of late.

The Junior Scratch Cup, sponsored by O’Mahoney Business Advisors (OMBA), Dungarvan, was claimed by Alan Furness of New Ross Golf Club with a level par 73 — finishing four shots clear of Jack McGrath (Gold Coast GC) and our talented rising star Anthony O’Donnell, both of whom returned scores of 77 (+4).

Well done to all who took part — it was fantastic to see so many travelling from afar to compete. Sincere thanks to our two generous sponsors and to the team at the Top Golfer Tour for their invaluable support in running an excellent event.

Inter-Club Team news

On Monday the 2nd June, our Ladies Minor Foursomes team travelled to Dungarvan GC, for their 2nd round match against our neighbours. As has been the trend recently, this again was a very tight match, finishing 2-2. However, we were again unlucky to fall on the wrong end, losing out on the tie break hole.

Well done to our team of Phil Kelly (Team Manager), Mary Herlihy, Eithne Ashby, Margaret O’Sullivan, Geraldine Curran, Nora Flynn, Trish O’Shea, Bridget Blackwell, Ciara Donnelly, Una Mulligan & Aisling Shanahan. Finally, we would like to the Dungarvan team for a very sporting match, and we wish them well in their next round.

Séamus Power’s US Open hopes dashed after disappointing withdrawals in Canada.

Séamus saw his hopes of a strong summer campaign crumble after a double setback—first in his bid to qualify for the 2025 US Open, then via an untimely withdrawal midway through the RBC Canadian Open.

He entered the US Open final qualifying at Lambton Golf & Country Club in Canada, on Monday 2nd last, looking for an opportunity to gain one of the qualifying spots on offer. However, after carding a two-over-par 72 in the opening round, he was forced to withdraw, ending his hopes.

Just 3 days later, at the RBC Canadian Open, his campaign was again cut short again when he withdrew after nine holes, —reports indicate the decision was prompted by a back injury.

Wishing him a swift recovery, and a return to form ahead of a crucial few months in his campaign.
