Captain’s Drive-In
The weather gods smiled kindly on West Waterford Golf Club last Sunday as members gathered for the 2026 Captain’s Drive-In. Following a week of orange and yellow weather warnings, there was a great turnout to support Captain Brian Fox, Lady Captain Delia Smith, Junior Captain Ruben O’Brien and President Ciara Donnelly, ahead of the fun scramble that followed.
After being introduced by the club’s new PGA professional, Colin, the four officers faced what is often the most nerve-racking tee shot of their season. Despite the pressure, Brian, Delia, Ciara and Ruben all successfully drove off the first tee to some warm applause and the odd smart comment.
Considering the recent heavy rainfall, the course was presented in excellent condition and proved enjoyable for all who took part in the scramble that followed. The scramble was a particularly welcome opportunity for newer members to mix with existing members and get to know fellow club members.
Following the golf, everyone enjoyed refreshments and finger food in the clubhouse. Captain Brian thanked all those who helped make the day such a success and said he was looking forward to a very positive and enjoyable year ahead for the club.
Scramble prize winners:
1st – Timmy Murphy, Margaret O’Sullivan, Eddie Glavin
2nd – David Phelan, Mary Donnelly, Conor Blackwell
3rd – Mary Curran, John Corbett, Paul Kelleher
4th – Mary French, Micheál Phelan, Niall Colleran
Well done to all involved.
