June Classic A Huge Success!

Over 100 teams took to the fairways this week for our annual fundraising Classic. Firstly, a big thank you to our three Sponsors, Aerhaus, FBD and Hydro Environmental Services. The course played fast and furious all week, helped by the sunshine and a blustery easterly wind, until the light rain on Saturday took some of the heat out of it. Again, huge credit must go to the greenkeeping staff for having the course in peak condition. As can be seen from the results, it was a closely contested affair with only 1 point separating 2nd and 4th place. One team outshone the rest, however. The serial Classic winning team from Carrick and Cahir Park returned a monster total of 120pts to win by a massive 16 points! Let’s all hope they enjoy their first prize! Once again, thank you to our Sponsors and congratulations to all winners in what was a very successful Classic overall.

Ladies Notes

Mary Fahey wins First Major:  On Sunday last the ladies played the first Major of the season, the Captain’s Prize to the Ladies kindly sponsored by the Mens Captain Michael Cass.  In racing parlance the ground conditions had changed from Firm to Good which made the greens a little more forgiving which was welcome given that it was a Stroke competition! There was a very good entry and the finish resulted in a photo finish between Mary Fahey and Jean O Donovan who each returned a super score of a nett 68 each.  Playing off 33 it was Mary’s first win in a Major while the runner up Jean O Donovan playing off 29 certainly has one in her sights.

Mary Lou Carroll played lovely golf to with the gross with a 74 playing off 18.  Patricia O Shea playing off 37 had a super round to return a 71 nett.  In Cat 1 the winner was June Whyte with a nett 74 playing off 18.  In Cat 2 Ciara Donnelly had a lovely round of 71 playing off 25 while in Cat 3 former Lady Captain Marie Curran was the winner with a nett 73 playing off 32.  Cat 4 saw Ann Rochford take the prize with a nett 73 playing off 35.  Our sincere thanks to Michael and Ann Cass who presented stylish Cass & Co hampers to the winners.

Get Into Golf Scramble:  On Tuesday evening Una Mulligan, Co-Ordinator of the Get Into Golf Programme is running a scramble.  It will be run over 5 holes and starts at 6.30.  This is always good fun and a great way to meet new members in the Club.

Cloyne Pharmacy Open 3 Ball:  On Thursday the West Waterford ladies host an Open 3 Ball competition kindly sponsored by Dermot Twomey and the Cloyne Pharmacy.  The format will be a Champagne Scramble with one score counting on the first 9 and two scores counting on the back 9.   Please phone 058 43216 to book a tee time or visit www.westwaterfordgolf.com

Joan Curran Memorial Competition:  On Sunday next members will play in a very special competition in memory of the late Joan Curran, Killossera.  Joan is fondly remembered for her enthusiastic approach to the game of golf and the manner in which she encouraged and cajoled all of us to get out on the golf course!  She was a wonderful Lady Captain.  Her husband Michael and family sponsor this competition and it is one of the highlights of the Golfing year.  Make sure you have your name down on the list to play as the draw for partners will take place on Thursday evening
