Weather Gods wreaking Havoc!  I was thinking this week how nice it must be to be a PGA golfer.  Lucky Seamus Power playing in the sunshine in Abu Dhabi while we are subjected to frost, fog and rain for the past week!  A Greenkeeper’s nightmare and we must applaud Morrie and his hardworking team in their efforts to keep the course in shape for the long season ahead.  Hopefully the weather will settle down and we can all take to the fairways with a pep in our step!

Worthy Recognition of our own Super Hero Pat Murphy!  The first time I took to the fairways in West Waterford was 1992 when Pat and Nora Spratt opened the course and welcomed in a very large group of newbies to golf!  On hand was Pat Murphy who gave us our first lessons!  He had to be exceptionally patient as most of us couldn’t even connect with the ball but Pat would always tell you, you were great!  Pat Murphy has contributed to the progress in in golf at Club level but also at Munster Council and National council levels.  Thirty years on you will still find Pat working away quietly for West Waterford.  His energy is boundless and his contribution to West Waterford has simply been enormous.  On Tuesday last week Pat’s commitment to golf was recognised when he received the inaugural Munster Golf Volunteer of the Year for 2022 award. On behalf of our Lady Captain Nora Flynn I congratulate you Pat.  A richly deserved award

Changes to Winter League:  Given the difficult weather conditions the competition has been reduced to 7 holes for the remainder of January.  At the time of going to Press Holes 2 and 3 are out of play but please keep an eye on the Ladies WhatsApp for updates.  I am quite sure that I will have some fancy scores to report on next week!  The first round ends on the 31st January.  Matchplay matches may also be played.  You have until the 19th March to complete these matches with the final of the Winter League scheduled for Sunday 26th March.

Membership Fees:  Please ensure that you have your Club membership fee for 2023 is paid.  We are welcoming new Members.  Last year’s Ladies Get into Golf Programme was a great success and it is so nice to see new faces.  West Waterford is a beautiful parkland course enjoying a really tranquil setting. Please contact Gillian at 058-43216 or consult our website for offers available.

Ongoing 9 Hole Competition:  The January 9 hole competition continues.  Up to last week entries have been very good and I am sure that this trend will continue to the end of the month.
