A week of heartfelt celebration, competitive golf, and exciting developments at West Waterford Golf Club — as the club continues its strong momentum into the summer season.

Jean O’Donovan Memorial Day

Saturday last was a bittersweet day at the club, as members came together to mark one year since the passing of beloved club member Jean O’Donovan. Joined by her husband Dinny, along with family, friends, and fellow members, the day was a fitting celebration of a remarkable woman — one who gave so much to this club, having served in every role on the ladies committee, on the management committee, and as a director of the club.

The sun shone, the golf was wonderful, and the evening brought good food, the odd gin and tonic, great music and plenty of dancing — exactly as Jean would have wanted it.

On the course, Mary Fahey topped the ladies’ honours, while new member Ryno Pelser claimed his first ever golf prize to head the gents’ competition. In the scramble, Marie Curran — a lady who travelled many miles in Jean’s company on the South East League circuit over the years — teamed up with Suzanne Dalton and David Curran to take top honours.

As was said on the night: Jean would have loved to be in the middle of it all — but then again, she probably was.

Results:

Ladies 18-hole Stableford: 1st Mary Fahey 38pts. Cat A: Fiona Hynes 37pts. Cat B: Bridget Blackwell 36pts. Cat C: Delia Smith 36pts.

Gents 18-hole Stableford: 1st Ryno Pelser 44pts. Cat A: David Philpott (Monkstown GC) 34pts. Cat B: Peter Hayes 42pts. Cat C: Billy McCarthy 35pts.

9-hole Scramble: 1st Marie Curran, Suzanne Dalton & David Curran 30 net. 2nd Shona Curran, Matt Dill & Elaine Flavin 30 net.

Special thanks to all the ladies involved in organising such a memorable and moving occasion.

Men’s Monthly Medal

It was a landmark Sunday for Junior Captain Ruben O’Brien, who stepped up to compete against the senior men in the monthly medal — and came away with top prize. A familiar face around the fairways as he fine-tunes his game, Ruben’s dedication is clearly paying off. On current form, his handicap of 12 may not stay that way for long.

Results: 1st Ruben O’Brien 67 net. 2nd Stephen Cass 67 net. 3rd Denis Herlihy 68 net. 4th Neil Parks 71 net.

Men’s Tuesday Treats (9-hole Open)

Results: 1st Tom Dalton 23pts. 2nd Cian Culloo 21pts.

18-hole Stableford GOY: Sponsor Easons Dungarvan.

Results: 1st Ciara Donnelly 38pts. 2nd Aisling Shanahan 38pts

Club Matchplay — In Full Swing

There has been tremendous activity on the fairways over the past two to three weeks, with the first rounds of the Club Mixed Foursomes, Men’s Fourball and Men’s Singles all concluded. For those who didn’t progress, the shield competitions offer another opportunity to compete for silverware. The draw for the Ladies Foursomes matchplay has also been made — following an excellent response from members. Ladies, it’s time to find your opponents and get out and enjoy some competitive golf.

Inter Club Matchplay

Best of luck to our Mixed Fourball team who play Tramore GC on Mon 1st June at 1:30pm at home, and also our Barton Shield team who kick off their campaign against Dungarvan GC at home next Sat 6th June at 11:30am. Our interclub teams have been competing exceptionally well this year, and we hope the success can continue over the coming week.
