What a fantastic weekend in the club! The sun shone, the course showed itself off in spectacular fashion, and the time sheets were packed from Friday through Sunday. We were also delighted to welcome the Munster Boys Development Squads to the club on Saturday and had a few celebrity visitors call in too. And that was before we even get to our very successful Club Classic and a great victory for our Pierce Purcell team. I’m even tired thinking about it all!
Club Classic, sponsored by Cleanzone Technology Limited and Prodec Coatings, Dungarvan
Let’s start with our Club Classic. From Thursday afternoon, the weather picked up beautifully, building to spectacular sunshine on Saturday and Sunday. Over the four days we had a fantastic turnout of both members and visitors.
The competition format of a full scramble again proved a very popular choice, with a great mix of gents, ladies, mixed, junior and visiting teams taking part.
By Sunday evening, the spoils remained local, with the family team of Denis, Mary and Darragh Herlihy taking the honours. Thanks to everyone who participated and also to those who put in endless hours organising this event.
Special thanks to our sponsors, Cleanzone Technology Ltd and Prodec Coatings, for their fantastic support.

The lucky winner of our Motocaddy draw, sponsored by Colin O’Gorman PGA pro and Motocaddy, was Una Mulligan. It was worth being in the clubhouse on Sunday evening to see the reaction !!

Inter-Club Matchplay
As mentioned above, our Pierce Purcell Shield team met Tipperary in their second round clash on Saturday last at West Waterford. What turned out to be two evenly matched sides produced a gripping contest, with three matches going all the way to the 17th and 18th holes. A flash of brilliance from Eoghan O’Shea from the greenside bunker (still don’t know how Davy put him there!) sealed the deal, with our lads emerged victorious on a scoreline of 3 to 1. Well done to Liam O’Brien & Richard Tobin, Michael Gill & Mike O’Keeffe, David Condon & Eoghan O’Shea, and Conor Blackwell & John P. Murphy. They will meet our near neighbours Gold Coast away in the next round, to be played by 20th June. Best of luck, lads!
Our Ladies Minor Foursomes team were also in action last week, facing Tramore at home in the second round. Unfortunately, their luck deserted them on the day, losing out in the final match on the 18th green. Well done to the ladies who represented the club with real pride — Bridget Blackwell, Marian Hilliard, Ciara Donnelly, Mary Fahey, Aine Parks, Geraldine Curran, Margaret O’Sullivan and Nora Flynn.

Youth Academy & Driving Range – “Buy a Brick” Campaign
This is one of the most important projects our club has undertaken in recent years, and we need every single member to get behind it. Our Youth Academy and Driving Range “Buy a Brick” fundraiser is well underway, and the progress being made is already visible and exciting — we’d encourage everyone to head over to the practice area and see for themselves the great work Jim and his team of helpers are putting in.
But here’s the thing — a project like this only succeeds when the whole club pulls together. Every brick purchased is a direct investment in the future of West Waterford Golf Club, in our young players, and in the facilities we all enjoy. Whether you’ve already contributed or haven’t yet had the chance, now is the time to get involved. No contribution is too small, and every one of them makes a real difference.
Full details of how to contribute will be posted in the clubhouse this week. Please take a moment to read them — and then take action. Let’s make this happen together.
Jean O’Donovan Memorial Day
Next weekend will be a poignant one at the club, as we come together to mark one year since the passing of our dear member Jean O’Donovan. Along with Jean’s family, the club will host a special open day in her memory on Saturday, May 30th.
The golf will be an open 18-hole singles competition for ladies and gents. For those who would prefer a shorter round, an open 9-hole scramble is scheduled from 3pm.
Anyone who knew Jean, or knew of Jean, is warmly welcome to come along and celebrate her passion for golf, her love of this club, and the many wonderful memories we all carry of her. Tea, coffee and scones will be served on arrival, and the day will close with music in the clubhouse — a truly fitting tribute to a much-loved member.
