West Waterford Golf Club News – w/c 18th May 2025

Busy Weekend for Inter-Club Teams

It was a packed and exciting weekend of inter-club action, with four of our teams representing the club across various competitions: the AIG Jimmy Bruen Shield, AIG Barton Shield, Fred Daly Trophy, and the AIG Men’s Senior Cup.

The action began on Saturday, with our Jimmy Bruen Shield team getting the weekend off to a great start. Hosting Williamstown GC, the team got a 2½ to 1½ win.

Later that day, our Barton Shield side took on a strong Faithlegg GC team. Despite a great effort, we came out on the wrong side of the result, losing 4 down.

On Sunday morning, our junior golfers lined out against Cobh GC in the opening round of the Fred Daly Trophy. In what was a great contest that went right to the final putt on the 18th green, the team narrowly lost out 3–2. The boys can be extremely proud of their performance and the way they conducted themselves—great ambassadors for the club.

Wrapping up the weekend on Sunday evening, our Men’s Senior Cup team delivered a big performance, defeating our near neighbours Gold Coast GC with an impressive 4½ to ½ victory. They now advance to the last 16, which will take place at Lee Valley GC on June 28.

Team Lineups:

  • Jimmy Bruen Shield: Conor Sheehan & Ian Walsh, Clive Cooney & Shane Hanrahan, Ciaran Power & Jack Mulligan and Colm O’Callaghan & Conor Walsh
  • Barton Shield:
Darragh Herlihy & Luke Cummins, and Thomas Conway & Eoin Conway

  • Men’s Senior Cup:

Well done to all players and management teams involved. Best of luck to the Jimmy Bruen and Senior Cup team as they prepare for their next rounds!

Denis Herlihy Claims Spratt Trophy with an excellent 43pts

Glorious sunshine and superb course conditions provided the perfect backdrop for this year’s Spratt Trophy, held over the weekend. The event drew a fantastic entry for this competition, held annually to honour the legacy of the Spratt family.

With the fairways running true and the greens offering a smooth, quick roll, it was Denis Herlihy who emerged as winner, delivering an excellent 43pts to win the Claret Jug trophy. The men didn’t have it all their own way, however, as Mary Donnelly produced a superb round of her own, finishing just one point behind on 42pts. Marc Mahoney claimed the Gross prize, thanks to an excellent round of 38pts, while Brian Collins, who continues his excellent year so far, taking third place with 39pts. Jack Ronayne rounded out the prizes with 38pts.

A large gathering of the Spratt family joined club members to celebrate the prize-winners. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the event such a success.
