Passing of Nora Spratt
It was with deep regret that we learned of the passing of Nora Spratt this past week. Nora, together with her husband Pat and their family, was the original founders of West Waterford Golf Club. Their dedication and commitment were instrumental in guiding the club through its formative years. Nora also served with distinction as Lady Captain in 2002 and remained a valued and supportive member of the Ladies Club throughout the years.
We extend our heartfelt sympathies to her husband Pat, her children Tom, Tricia, Austin, and Mags, their partners, as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
West Waterford Golf Club Fundraising Classic Tees Off May 30th
West Waterford Golf Club will host its annual Club Fundraising Golf Classic next weekend, from 29th May to 2nd June, in one of the highlights of the club calendar. Proudly sponsored by Cleanzone Technologies, The Lady Belle and GrowSport, this key fundraising event plays a vital role in supporting the ongoing development of the club’s facilities and program.
The format is a 3-person Texas Scramble, open to golfers of all levels, with excellent prizes on offer and a strong emphasis on fun, community, and friends. Mary Curran scoops the Joan Curran Memorial Prize
Our ladies turned out in great numbers on Sunday to honour the memory of Joan Curran, 10 years on from her passing. Joan, a former Lady Captain, was known for her warmth, encouragement, and love of the game — always happy to take beginners out for a few holes. As she used to say: *“Any day you can play golf is a good day.”*
After a competitive day’s golf, the results were:
1st: Mary Curran (39) – 43pts; 2nd: Trish O’Shea (35) – 40pts; Gross: Mary Donnelly; 3rd: Mary French (38) – 38pts

Men’s Monthly Medal
This month’s Men’s Monthly Medal resulted in a dominant win for Mark Blackwell, who posted an outstanding net score of 65. Mark finished a remarkable seven shots clear of the field, earning a well-deserved cut to his handicap. Congratulations also to young Anthony O’Donnell, who recorded an excellent gross score of 77 in challenging, windy conditions.
Special thanks to Aidan Walsh, Cappoquin, who sponsored this month’s Monthly Medal competition.

Inter-Club Team news
Our Junior Boys were in action in the Boys Foursomes in Castlemartyr GC last weekend, where they took on the home club. While losing on a 2–0 scoreline, both pairs of Anthony & Rueben, and Ross & Conor showed real grit with strong comebacks on the back 9 and played with great sportsmanship throughout. A valuable experience for the lads!
Next weekend is looking like another busy weekend for our inter-club teams.
On Friday 30th May at 3:30pm, our Mixed Fourball team travel to neighbours, Dungarvan GC, for their 3rd round match. After a great win in the 2nd round, hope are high for this bunch of Ladies and Men. On Mon 3rd June at 3:30pm, our ladies Minor Foursomes team also travel to Dungarvan GC for their round 2 match. We wish both teams the best of luck. All support would be welcome

Drainage Works Commence
Essential drainage works will begin this week on holes 2, 3, 11, and 12. These upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to enhance course conditions, particularly to improve winter playing conditions. Some disruption to play may occur during the next two weeks, and members & visitors are encouraged to check clubhouse notices for updates. These improvements are proudly supported by the Community Sport Facilities Fund through the National Lottery.
Players should note that Rule 16.1 (Abnormal Ground Conditions) will apply — players are entitled to free relief if newly laid drains interfere with stance or swing.

Séamus Power Misses Cut at PGA Championship, Sets Sights on Charles Schwab Challenge
Séamus Power delivered a commendable performance at the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge, held at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, last week. After playing through difficult weather conditions for an opening 3-over-par 73 in the opening round, he rebounded impressively, carding a 3-under 67 in the second round and a 1-under 69 in the third. He will however have been disappointed with his closing round of 73, for a tied 59th place finish. This outing however, marks a positive step forward after a series of missed cuts. He has a week off next week, before returning again in June.
