Steady Week for Seamus!

Seamus had a steady week at the weather-shortened Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The final round was cancelled due to stormy weather in California, so the result was declared after three days of play. Seamus finished on -7 in a tie for 31st place, which will earn him a fine cheque and some valuable Fed-Ex Cup points, Seamus will now travel to Arizona for the traditionally raucous atmosphere of the WM Phoenix Open. Best of luck to him from us all here in West Waterford.

Good Return to Golf for Gary!

South Africa was the location for Gary Hurley’s return to action at the SDC Open on the Challenge Tour. Three excellent rounds of -4 saw him in 15th place going into the final day. A score of +1 on Sunday meant he slipped back to 36th position in the end, but this was still a solid week after his break from the game. Gary is staying in South Africa for the Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open this week and we give him our best wishes.

Handicap News

2024 WHS Updates such as the below come into effect in Ireland on 1st April 2024.

Improvements have been made to the method used to handle Holes Not Played, which will be based on a player’s expected score rather than a score of net par. When one or more holes have not been played, this method takes your Score Differential for the holes you did play and combines it with an expected Score Differential for the holes you did not play, based on the scoring pattern of players with the same Handicap Index as you.

This new method will produce an 18-hole Score Differential that more accurately reflects a player’s ability.

The procedure for calculating a Score Differential using an expected score can be summarised as follows:

1. An expected Score Differential for the hole or holes not played is calculated, based on a given Handicap Index and a course of standard difficulty.

2. A Score Differential for the holes played is calculated using the player’s actual scores and the rating value of the holes played.

3. The Score Differential from the holes played is combined with the expected Score Differential to produce an 18-hole Score Differential.

4. For 9-hole rounds – An 18-hole Score Differential is created by combining the 9-hole Score Differential for the 9 holes played with the player’s expected score over 9 holes.

Note – expected scoring is a closed calculation which is generated by computer precision software.

Please note the following Winter Rules in play for the duration of the Winter period:

  • Buggies are not permitted on the course until further notice*
  • *Keep an eye on the noticeboard and BRS for updates in relation to Bunker and Buggy status

Note: Given the soft ground conditions, a temporary rule is in place allowing players a free drop if a ball cannot be found in open ground, in agreement with playing partners.

Fantasy Golf 2024

This week was a funny week for our Fantasy Golf players as the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was reduced to three days due to stormy weather in California. Players lining up substitutes for a big move on Sunday were duly thwarted, but ‘them’s the breaks’ as the saying goes! It’s fair to say a lot of players were a bit let down by Rory McIlroy as the Irishman didn’t perform as expected, even falling foul of a rules infringement on Thursday. Equally fair to say, however, is that Wyndham Clark fully deserved his victory after his superb 60 on Saturday. The full  fantasy results will be communicated on WhatsApp as soon as FedEx Cup bonus points are awarded.

The tour moves onto the raucous Waste Management Phoenix Open next week, a full field tournament with a halfway cut. Best of luck to all for week 6!
