President’s Prize to Gents and Ladies, presented by Ciara Donnelly

Last weekend marked a historic occasion at the club, as Ciara Donnelly became the first lady to present her President’s Prize to both the Men and Lady members. The weekend began with the Men’s qualifying rounds on Friday and Saturday, from which the top 30 progressed to Sunday morning’s final round. The Ladies’ competition was held over 18 holes on Sunday. Despite recent unsettled weather, it seemed the weather gods answered Ciara’s prayers, with most golfers managing to stay dry over the course of the weekend.

In the Men’s competition, Liam O’Brien once again demonstrated that his ability to keep the ball out of trouble. His total of 78 points across the two rounds secured him the title. One of the standout performers of the weekend was Craig Flynn, playing only his second and third competitive rounds. His pitch and putt background, coupled with his intimate knowledge of the course, earned him a well-deserved second place.

The Ladies’ competition was tightly contested, with Joanne Fox edging out Mary Lou Carroll by a single stroke. Joanne carded an excellent nett 72 to claim the title.

In front of a large crowd at the presentation, Ciara began by paying heartfelt tribute to some dear friends of the club who have sadly passed away in recent months: last year’s Ladies’ winner Jean O’Donovan, club founder Nora Spratt, and more recently Mary Spratt, whose contribution to our juniors and newcomers over the years has been immeasurable. Ciara also reflected on the significance of her presidency, noting how it’s now the norm to have a woman in the role—a testament to the club’s continued progress. She highlighted the remarkable development within the club over the past two to three years and expressed optimism for a very bright future at West Waterford Golf Club.

In their acceptance speeches, both Liam and Joanne acknowledged the tireless work Ciara carries out behind the scenes and how deeply appreciated she is by all. Liam also remarked on the joy of being paired with one of our promising junior golfers during qualifying, and how encouraging it is to see the efforts of our Junior Committees paying off, with young golfers now competing for major honours at the club.
