Seamus makes another cut!

It was a mixed bag of rounds for Seamus at the weather interrupted WM Phoenix Open. After an average first round of level par, Seamus rallied in round 2 to make the cut at -2. Possibly affected by the weather delays, he then slipped back to +1 after the third round before once again rallying to finish on -1 at the end of the tournament. This all added up to a tie for 66th place and some more valuable FedEx Cup points. He now stands in 96th position in the FedEx Cup rankings with the top 125 retaining full playing rights next season. Being in all the signature events this season is a huge advantage for Seamus and he will be hoping to climb up towards the top 50 as the season progresses. This week he takes his place in the Genesis Invitational, the third signature event of the season, where a certain Tiger will make a return to the game!

Bad week for Gary!

Gary Hurley had a week to forget on the challenge tour, finishing in a tie for 150th. He will be hoping for better this week at the Dimension Data Pro-am. We wish him the very best of luck.

Handicap News

2024 WHS Updates such as the below come into effect in Ireland on 1st April 2024.

Improvements have been made to the method used to handle Holes Not Played, which will be based on a player’s expected score rather than a score of net par. When one or more holes have not been played, this method takes your Score Differential for the holes you did play and combines it with an expected Score Differential for the holes you did not play, based on the scoring pattern of players with the same Handicap Index as you.

This new method will produce an 18-hole Score Differential that more accurately reflects a player’s ability.

The procedure for calculating a Score Differential using an expected score can be summarised as follows:

1. An expected Score Differential for the hole or holes not played is calculated, based on a given Handicap Index and a course of standard difficulty.

2. A Score Differential for the holes played is calculated using the player’s actual scores and the rating value of the holes played.

3. The Score Differential from the holes played is combined with the expected Score Differential to produce an 18-hole Score Differential.

4. For 9-hole rounds – An 18-hole Score Differential is created by combining the 9-hole Score Differential for the 9 holes played with the player’s expected score over 9 holes.

Note – expected scoring is a closed calculation which is generated by computer precision software.

Fantasy Golf 2024

I never remember this happening before, but bad weather once again affected play at the WM Phoenix Open. It seems like every tournament on the PGA tour is being delayed by bad weather these days. There was about 7 hours of delayed play due to storms in total, but thankfully the tournament did finish, just about, on Sunday evening. The story of the tournament was Charley Hoffman who played some excellent golf and looked for all the world like he was certain to win when he finished on -21, three shots clear of the nearest challenger at that stage. However, Canadian Nick Taylor showed his true mettle by making birdies on three of his last four holes, including the 18th to tie Hoffman on -21. Two more birdies on 18 in the playoff gave Taylor a fully deserved victory, but you had to feel a bit sorry for the veteran Hoffman, one of the more popular players on tour.

Neither Taylor nor Hoffman featured on any fantasy rosters to continue the trend of surprising winners on tour this season. However, many players had a solid week with picks featuring in the top 10. The full updated leaderboard will be communicated on WhatsApp as soon as the FedEx Cup bonus points are allocated. Next week is the Genesis Invitational at Riviera, another signature event with no cut. A certain Tiger Woods will make a return to the game, but will he make our fantasy rosters I wonder!
