Diarmuid Horgan & Frances Carroll rise to the top to win President’s Prizes
Last weekend, Ciara Donnelly fulfilled one of her final duties in her second term as Club President by hosting her second President’s Prize — and what a fitting way to mark the occasion. As with everything Ciara turns her hand to in the club, her preparation for the weekend was immaculate, with every detail thought through and covered off. Even the weather cooperated, delivering a truly spectacular few days of golf.
The men’s competition got underway on Wednesday evening with first-round qualifying, continuing through Thursday and Friday. Qualifying produced some excellent scoring, with plenty of joy — and a little heartbreak for others — along the way. Experience came to the fore, with Diarmuid Horgan and John Keane leading the field, closely shadowed by relative newcomer to the game, Shane McCarthy. Saturday’s final round proved a sterner test, with the wind adding a real challenge to conditions. Diarmuid, however, produced another rock-steady round and, in the words of John Keane himself, was simply impossible to catch.
The ladies’ competition was played over one round on Sunday and produced equally impressive scoring. Frances Carroll was a hugely popular winner, carding an excellent 65 nett, with Kathleen Broderick close behind on 67 nett.
A huge crowd turned out for Sunday night’s prizegiving, where Ciara spoke with pride of being the club’s first female President. It was a special moment — and one echoed throughout the evening, as many of the prize winners spoke warmly of how fortunate the club is to have a President so passionate about the club, and who brings such knowledge and experience to its day-to-day running. It capped off a memorable weekend, and a fine reflection of the great spirit currently running through the club.

Heartbreak for Jimmy Bruen team in Youghal.
On Sunday last, our Jimmy Bruen team faced up to Douglas GC in the last 16 in Youghal GC. After a battling display, we ended up tying the match 2-2. However, lady luck was not on our side, and we lost out in a playoff. However, great credit to Niall & Keelan, Colm & Jack, Gary & Rueben and Derek & Jack for being so competitive against a strong Douglas team.
However, hope of inter-club success continues with our Pierce Purcell team travelling to Tramore GC to take on Cobh GC in the Munster East final on Bank Holiday Monday. All support would be greatly appreciated. Best of luck to the team.
