West Waterford Golf Club News – w/c 27th Apr 2026
New Members
The club reached a fantastic milestone last week, welcoming its 100th new member this year — and with momentum still building, that number continues to grow. This is a wonderful reflection of the enduring strength and growing appeal of our club, our course, and the exciting facilities we have planned for the future. We extend a very warm welcome to each and every one of our new members. We hope you enjoy your time both on the course and in the clubhouse, and that you quickly feel at home within our community. If you or any of your friends are interested in joining us, please contact Colin at the pro shop on 058 43216.
Ladies and Gents Get into Golf — 2026 Programme
A final reminder, if you have any friends or relations who might be curious about golf, our 8 week Get into Golf programme begins on May 19th, with the first four weeks of coaching delivered by PGA Professional Colin O’Gorman, followed by four weeks on the course with the support of club members.
For details, contact Niall at 086 603 1169 or Bridget at 087 812 8157.
Open Singles this May Bank holiday weekend
Next weekend, we will host Ladies & Gents 18-hole open singles, kindly sponsored by Centra, Youghal Road Dungarvan and Tommy Kiely Car Sales, Ring. Entries are open via the website, or by calling 058 43216.
Centra on Youghal Road, Dungarvan, recently transitioned from Forde’s Daybreak, following the retirement of long-time owner Kevin Forde in late 2025. The store is now under the ownership of Haroon Nawab, an experienced retailer who has retained the existing staff to ensure continuity for the local community. We have had a great relationship with Kevin and his staff for many years, and we look forward to continuing that with Haroon and his team at Centra in the years to come.
Tommy Kiely Car Sales is a long-standing business located in Ring and known for years for high-quality bodywork. Tommy’s business has evolved into a full-service motoring and car sales hub, servicing the local community.

Inter-Club Matchplay
Ladies Revive Active Fourball: Our ladies’ team came up against a strong Lismore GC side on Sunday afternoon in this matchplay competition. While the golf was of a good standard throughout, Lismore held the upper hand on the day, running out winners by 3.5 to 1.5. Hard luck to our ladies on a valiant effort, and best of luck to Lismore in the next round.
Next weekend promises to be a busy one for our inter-club teams. On Saturday afternoon (2nd), both our Men’s Pierce Purcell team and our Ladies Minor Foursomes team travel to Waterford Castle GC, where they will face the host club. Then, on Bank Holiday Monday (4th), our Mixed Fourball team host Williamstown GC at home in West Waterford, in the first round of that competition.
We wish all three teams the very best of luck.
Club Matchplay Competitions
Club Mixed Foursomes Matchplay:
This is the final week for entries into the Club Mixed Foursomes Matchplay. The draw for pairings and matches will take place next weekend, so if you are interested, make sure your name is on the entry sheet on the noticeboard before then.
Men’s Singles Matchplay:
There has been a great response for this year’s Men’s Singles Matchplay, which will once again be sponsored by PestSafe (and club member Batt O’Donovan). PestSafe Limited is a registered pest control service based in Abbeyside, specialising in the management of rodents and insects of all kinds. Batt provided fantastic sponsorship for this event last year, and we are very grateful for his continued support.
This year, all entrants are guaranteed two matches, with first-round defeated players entering the plate competition. Entries close this coming weekend, so if you haven’t already done so, get your name on the entry sheet on the noticeboard.
Men’s Fourball Matchplay
Another strong entry for this competition, with the closing date again falling this coming weekend. Remember, if you don’t have a partner, you can still add your name to the list, and we will pair you up — don’t let that stop you from taking part in this great matchplay format.
Casting an eye over the entry list is not unlike studying the entries on the weekend before the upcoming Punchestown festival. A lot of promise, who’s in form? or who’s well handicapped? Already, the whispers in the club suggest the smart money is on the ‘Mark & Eddie’ pairing, who have all the hallmarks of a carefully laid Dan Skelton plot job heading for the Cheltenham Festival — well-prepared, well-handicapped, and suspiciously confident. Word has it that Paddy Corkery has been spotted in hushed conversation with his accountant, and his bookie, with a wager of seismic proportions reportedly in the pipeline. Whether Paddy’s coup lands or gets turned over remains to be seen — but one thing is certain: with this field, it’s going to be a very interesting matchplay competition this summer. Remember entries close this weekend — get your name on the entry sheet before the declarations close!

A date for your diary will be the Annual Club Classic, which this year will run from Thurs 21st May to Sunday 24th May.
