Inter-Club Matchplay

It has been a highly successful weekend for West Waterford Golf Club’s inter-club teams, with two impressive victories recorded at Waterford Castle GC on Saturday.

The Ladies Minor Foursomes team got proceedings underway, led off by the pairing of Ciara Donnelly and Margaret O’Sullivan, followed by Mary Fahey and Áine Parks, Bridget Blackwell and Trish O’Shea, and Nora Flynn and Geraldine Curran. It proved to be a tense and closely fought contest, with two matches going to the 17th and two to the 18th, but our ladies held their nerve to claim a deserved 3–1 victory.

The Men’s Pierce Purcell Shield team then took to the course immediately after the ladies, and quickly asserted themselves, establishing early leads in two of their four matches while keeping the other two competitive. The dominant display continued for the match, with our boys winning on a commanding score of 3½–½. Well done to the four pairings, Paul Kelleher & Conor Blackwell, Liam O’Brien and John P Murphy, Mick O’Gorman and Michael O’Keeffe, and Patsy O’Donnell and Eoghan O’Shea.

At the time of writing, the club’s Mixed Fourball team were preparing to host.Williamstown GC at West Waterford in the opening round of their competition. Hopefully we will have had a good result by the time you read this.

Club Classic

With the bank holiday behind us, attention now turns to our annual Club Classic, which this year runs from Thursday 21st to Sunday 24th May. The Classic is one of the most important events in the club calendar, supporting the running of our club. This year, the event takes on added significance, as it will run in conjunction with the ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign for our new Driving Range.

The competition format will be a full Scramble, open to teams of three — gents, ladies, mixed and junior — ensuring a fun and inclusive day out for members and visitors alike. Further details on entry and sponsorship will follow shortly.

Youth Academy & Driving Range – ‘Buy a Brick’

The Club Classic is also an opportunity to highlight the progress being made on our new Driving Range and Golf Academy — a facility that will be the only one of its kind within a 40km radius, and one that will serve not just our members, but the wider West Waterford community for generations to come. We extend our sincere and heartfelt thanks to the many members, supporters and local businesses who have so generously contributed to the ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign to date — your support means the world to this club. However, we still have some way to go to reach the €120,000-plus needed to bring this facility to life, and now is the time for every member to play their part. This is our club, our community, and our future — don’t let others carry the load alone. To contribute, or to find out more, please contact Noel Conway, Jim McGrath, or any member of the Management Committee.

Club Matchplay Competitions

The draws for the club Mixed Foursomes, the Men’s Singles matchplay (kindly sponsored by PestSafe and club member Batt O’Donovan), and the Men’s Fourball matchplay are being drawn on Bank Holiday Monday evening. So, watch the club noticeboard for your draw, and the dates by which your match(es) must be played.

The various matchplay competitions are great fun, and often seriously competitive. However, they are sure to contribute to some great speculation, lots of talking points and a lot of craic over the summer months.

Gents Fixtures

The gents have a busy week ahead. Tuesday 5th May brings a 9-hole Open Tuesday Treats competition, before the Jolly Boys head off on their away day to County Tipperary GC on Friday 8th May. The weekend rounds off with the club 18-hole competition on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th May.

Ladies Results

In the April 9-hole ongoing competition, kindly sponsored by Una Mulligan, Margaret O’Sullivan took top honours with 42 points, ahead of Geraldine Curran on 40 points and Áine Parks on 39 points. Well done to all.

Ladies Fixtures

The ladies also have a full week of action. Thursday 7th May sees the Mná Eile Open Qualifier, kindly sponsored by the Coach House. Running across the weekend from Thursday 7th to Sunday 10th May, members can also take part in the 9-hole qualifier stableford and the 9-hole May ongoing competition, kindly sponsored by Trish O’Shea. The main 18-hole stroke medal, a GoY qualifier generously sponsored by Barron’s Bakery, runs from Sat. 9th, Sun 10th and Thurs 14th May.

Date for Your Diary – Remembering Jean O’Donovan

On Saturday 30th May, West Waterford Golf Club will host a special open day in memory of Jean O’Donovan. Organised in conjunction with Jean’s family, the day will feature an open 18-hole singles competition for both men and ladies, followed by an open 9-hole scramble from 3pm.

All are welcome, and tea, coffee and scones will be served on arrival. The evening will round off with music in the clubhouse — a fitting way to celebrate a much-loved member.

Good Wishes to Club Pro Colin

It is a big week for our club professional, Colin O’Gorman — though not in the Club or on the golf course. Next weekend, Colin and his fiancée Caoimhe Hickey will celebrate their wedding day. Colin has been a breath of fresh air since joining the club, and everyone at West Waterford wishes the happy couple a wonderful day and many years of health and happiness together.
