Seamus Misses Cut!

Seamus never really got going this week at Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open. Opening with a +2 on the more difficult South Course on Wednesday meant he had it all to do to make the halfway cut. In the end, his three bogeys on Thursday on the North Course cost him and he finished on level par after a round of -2. He will no doubt dust himself off and get ready to go again for this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, another signature event on the schedule. Best of luck Seamus from all your fans in West Waterford.

Gary Hurley Returns to Action!

After a long break from the game, Gary Hurley returns to action this week on the European Challenge Tour for the SDC Open in South Africa. We all give Gary our best wishes for the week and season ahead.

Men’s Notes

Men’s Winter League 2024

Thankfully, there was some play for the final week of the qualifying period. In all, 20 scores were recorded for the league. Two prizes were awarded this week and in first place was Ger Flavin with 33pts. The consistent Noel Conway finished second on 30pts after a countback. Congrats to both men! A final report on the league standings and the Match-ups for the quarter finals will be communicated on the WhatsApp group in due course. Thanks to everyone who supported the league this year and did their best to play despite the dreadful weather.

Handicap News

Over the next couple of weeks, watch out for a number of communications about the 2024 Updates to the Rules of Handicapping. The changes will come into effect in GB&I from 1st April 2024.

One of the biggest changes being made in GB&I is to the Course Handicap calculation. The Course Handicap calculation will now take into account the difference between the Course Rating and the Par of the course, so instead of playing to the Course Rating, you will be playing to Par.

If the Course Rating is higher than par, you will receive more shots.

If the Course Rating is lower than par, you will receive not as many shots.

We encourage golfers to download the Golf Ireland App, if they haven’t already done so, as players can view their Course Handicaps on the App.

Winter Rules

Please note the following Winter Rules in play for the duration of the Winter period:

  • Place on the ground within 6 inches on Fairway & Rough.
  • Bunkers: Out of play until further notice*. Drop outside bunker at nearest point of relief, not nearer the hole
  • Buggies are not permitted on the course until further notice*
  • *Keep an eye on the noticeboard and BRS for updates in relation to Bunker and Buggy status

Note: Given the soft ground conditions, a temporary rule is in place allowing players a free drop if a ball cannot be found in open ground, in agreement with playing partners.

Junior Academy News

To kick off the 2024 Junior season there will be a prize-giving ceremony held on Sunday 4th February at 5.30pm in the clubhouse. All outstanding 2023 prizes will be presented and information on the year ahead will be communicated. All parents and Juniors are invited to attend.

Fantasy Golf 2024

The trend of unheralded and surprising winners continued this week at The Farmers Insurance Open, where French man Matthieu Pavon took the spoils. Not only was it a first win for Pavon on The PGA Tour, but it was also the first ever win for a French player in the tour’s history. Needless to say, nobody in our league selected Pavon on their roster, and in fact, there has been no winner selected in the 4 weeks so far. The top 3 this week were An Poc Ar Buile with 317pts in first place, Jack Mulligan just 2pts behind in second and brianegan in third with 309pts. Proving that consistency from week to week will be the key, only brianegan of the three features on the overall leaderboard, where he jumped back up to third place. Stephen Walsh on 1578pts has overtaken PBDaly to claim top spot after 4 weeks.

There may be a chance for big moves this week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which is another signature event where big points will be on offer. All the big names will be playing, including Rory McIlroy who makes his first appearance on the PGA tour of the season. It’s also a great opportunity for Seamus to get a good week under his belt. Best of luck to all!
