West Waterford Golf Club News – w/c 30th Sept. 2024

Play in Pink Scramble for Breast Cancer Research

On Sunday next, 6th Oct., our ladies will host their annual ‘Play in Pink’ fundraiser for Breast Cancer Research. ‘Play in Pink’ is the golf fundraising arm of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute, and the initiative was set up 20 years ago to help fund a comprehensive research programme at the University of Galway.

This year, our ladies have organised that it will be a scramble format, open to both Ladies & Gents. So, if you are interested in playing and supporting this great cause, put your name on the sheet posted in the noticeboard in the clubhouse.

West Waterford Golfers on the Professional Circuit

This week, West Waterford’s Gary Hurley competed in the Swiss Challenge, held just outside Basel. With the season nearing its conclusion and the ‘Road to Mallorca’ Grand Final fast approaching, ranking points are crucial for Gary as he aims to stay within the top 45 to qualify for the Grand Final. Despite adverse weather conditions and course flooding, which reduced the tournament to 36 holes, Gary delivered another solid performance. He carded rounds of 72 and 71, finishing at -1 and securing a tied 21st place. This result adds valuable points to his standing in the Challenge Tour’s ‘Race to Mallorca,’ where he currently holds 40th place.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Séamus Power is set to return to action on the PGA Tour as the Fall schedule kicks off at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi. After an encouraging performance at the Irish Open, Power will be aiming for a strong start to the 2025 FedEx Cup season and looking to gain crucial ranking points.

Junior Academy

Junior Golf Season Wraps Up with Final Session

Saturday evening marked the conclusion of our organized junior golf sessions for the season, and it couldn’t have been a more pleasant end. We extend our sincere thanks to all the participants and parents who supported the sessions throughout the year. It’s been a joy watching our juniors improve their skills. In the final event, the cadets showcased their progress by playing their own ball over five holes, demonstrating the hard work they’ve put in.

Although the official season has ended, golf will continue over the winter for our J4 and J5 groups, with more details to be shared with parents in the coming week.

Matchplay Semi-Finals Heat Up

The first semi-final of the singles matchplay took place on Friday evening, with Anthony O’Donnell edging out Conor Keane in a thrilling match that went down to the wire. Anthony claimed victory on the 18th hole in a contest that could have gone either way. Congratulations to both players for a fantastic game.

The second semi-final, featuring Ross Kavanagh and Ted Lynch, is set to take place this week. Best of luck to both competitors in what promises to be another closely fought battle.

Last Man Standing Update

As the Last Man Standing competition moves forward, it’s expected to become increasingly challenging. Best of luck to all remaining participants!
