Club Matchplay Finals: A Weekend of Exciting Golf
Last weekend saw the much-anticipated finals of the Club Mixed Foursomes Matchplay and the Ladies Plate Matchplay. The Mixed Foursomes event has been a tremendous success this year, with participants thoroughly enjoying the competitive spirit and format. In the final, our Men’s Club Captain, Niall Coleran, and Áine Parks faced off against Neil Parks and Una Mulligan. In a closely contested match, Niall and Áine secured victory with a 2&1 win. A special thank you to Currans Topline Hardware for sponsoring this year’s Mixed Foursomes matchplay competition and contributing to its success.
In the Ladies Plate Matchplay final, Mary Fahey faced Una Mulligan in a hard-fought contest, with Mary emerging victorious. Congratulations to both Mary and Una for their impressive performances and for reaching the final, displaying great skill and determination throughout the competition.
This victory wraps up the Ladies Matchplay season, following Mary Donnelly’s recent win over Bridget Blackwell in the Club Matchplay. A heartfelt thank you to all the ladies who took part in this year’s competitions, and a special acknowledgment to Daltons Jewellers for their generous sponsorship of the Ladies Matchplay.

Junior Academy
This weekend saw the thrilling conclusion of the Junior Foursomes Matchplay final, held on Sunday evening. A tightly contested match unfolded, with Ross Kavanagh and David Prendergast emerging victorious over Anthony O’Donnell and Kieran Murphy on the 18th hole, clinching the win 1 Up. Congratulations to all four boys for a fantastic match, and special commendations to Ross and David
on their well-earned victory.
Saturday’s regular Junior competition was somewhat dampened by the rain, but that didn’t stop Charlie Kelly from delivering an impressive performance, securing the win with a score of 21 points. Well done, Charlie!
Lastly, a big thank you to everyone who participated in our Last Man Standing fundraiser. The weekend’s results were kind to most participants, and we wish good luck to those still in the running!
Golf on the Professional Circuit: A West Waterford Perspective
This week, Gary Hurley was the sole West Waterford representative in action, competing at the Italian Challenge Open at Argentario Golf Club, near Siena, Italy. Gary delivered solid performances with rounds of 70, 66, 73, and 73, finishing in 48th place. This result adds valuable points to his standing in the Challenge Tour’s ‘Race to Mallorca,’ where he is currently ranked 40th.
Gary is enjoying a standout season on the Challenge Tour, achieving his highest order of merit position, making the most cuts in his career, and securing his best year in terms of prize money. His journey continues next week at the Swiss Challenge, held at Golf Saint Apollinaire, just outside Basel. We wish him continued success as he aims for further progress on the professional circuit.
