Men’s Notes

Men’s Winter League 2024

Due to the frost during the week, and then the storm at the weekend, there was no play in the Winter League last week. It’s fair to say that the weather has once again played havoc with the league this year and a big thank you to everyone who got out and played despite the conditions. This will be the final week of qualifying before the top 8 teams will go through to the quarter finals of the matchplay. Hopefully, the weather will allow for some play this week!

Handicap News

Over the next couple of weeks, watch out for a number of communications about the 2024 Updates to the Rules of Handicapping. The changes will come into effect in GB&I from 1st April 2024.

One of the biggest changes being made in GB&I is to the Course Handicap calculation. The Course Handicap calculation will now take into account the difference between the Course Rating and the Par of the course, so instead of playing to the Course Rating, you will be playing to Par.

If the Course Rating is higher than par, you will receive more shots.

If the Course Rating is lower than par, you will receive not as many shots.

We encourage golfers to download the Golf Ireland App, if they haven’t already done so, as players can view their Course Handicaps on the App.

Winter Rules

Please note the following Winter Rules in play for the duration of the Winter period:

  • Place on the ground within 6 inches on Fairway & Rough.
  • Bunkers: Out of play until further notice*. Drop outside bunker at nearest point of relief, not nearer the hole
  • Buggies are not permitted on the course until further notice*
  • *Keep an eye on the noticeboard and BRS for updates in relation to Bunker and Buggy status

Note: Given the soft ground conditions, a temporary rule is in place allowing players a free drop if a ball cannot be found in open ground, in agreement with playing partners.

Junior Academy News

The Junior Leadership Team met on 4th January and made a plan for the coming year. A prize-giving ceremony to present all outstanding prizes from last year will take place later in the month. Anthony O’Donnell has been named Junior Captain for 2024 so please join us in wishing Anthony the very best of luck for the year ahead.

Fantasy Golf 2024

Week 3 of the Fantasy league was held over three courses in California for the American Express. Once again, this was a full field of 156 players, with a cut after three rounds when each of the players had played each course. As usual, many of the same players were fancied, with Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay among the most popular. However, for the third week in a row there was a surprise winner. In fact this week was the biggest surprise of all as amateur Nick Dunlap won the tournament, the first time an amateur has won on the PGA tour since Phil Mickelsen in 1991! The updated fantasy leaderboard will be communicated on WhatsApp as soon as the FedEx cup points are distributed later on Monday. Next week, the tour stays in California for the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Seamus Power is in the field so there will be added home interest. Best of luck to all!
