Fred Daly Team Perform Well at Dungarvan GC

The club’s first inter-club outing of the year saw the Fred Daly boys’ team travel to Dungarvan GC for a singles matchplay fixture. Although they were beaten by a strong Dungarvan side, the young players gave an excellent account of themselves throughout. Matchplay experience of this kind is invaluable at that age, and the lessons learned will stand to them in the competitions ahead. The club wishes the Dungarvan team well in the next round.

Ladies and Gents Get into Golf — 2026 Programme Launched

The club’s popular Get into Golf programme returns this year, open to both ladies and gents. The eight-week programme begins on May 19th, with the first four weeks of coaching delivered by PGA Professional Colin O’Gorman, followed by four weeks on the course with the support of club members.

Last year’s joint programme was a great success, with participants forming great golfing friendships while discovering that, whatever your background, everyone starts their golf journey from the same place.

Anyone interested in giving golf a try — whether to take up a new sport, meet new people, or become part of a welcoming community — is encouraged to get in touch. Contact Niall at 086 602 1169, Bridget at 087 812 8157, or Colin in the Pro Shop at 058 43216.

Happy 90th birthday Justin Spratt

From everyone at West Waterford Golf Club, and from the wider golfing community who have had the pleasure and the challenge of sharing a fairway with him over the years, happy birthday to Justin Spratt who celebrates his 90th birthday on the golf course this week. While everyone is aware of his fiercely competitive spirit, and his roguish character, his most enduring contribution, however, may be the generations of young golfers he helped to coach and develop, with two of his proteges, Séamus Power and Gary Hurley going on to reach the highest levels of the game.

As he reaches this remarkable milestone, Justin remains as passionate about the club and its future as he has ever been — a true champion of West Waterford Golf Club in every sense of the word.

May your drives be long, your putts be true, and your competitive spirit remain utterly undimmed for many, many years to come.

Counting Competitions Return

The first hints of summer arrived this weekend as the club returned to counting competitions. After several months of preferred lies, with bunkers now back in play and scores counting in full, members faced a sterner test of their game. It is a welcome return, and members can look forward to a full summer of competitive golf ahead.

Change to Prize Allocation in Gents Club Competitions

A change to the prize structure in gents’ club competitions takes effect this week, with prizes now allocated by handicap category rather than overall finishing position.

The aim is straightforward: to give every competitor, regardless of ability, a fair and genuine chance of winning. Golf’s handicap system was designed to level the playing field, and this prize structure reflects that spirit. Whether a low or high handicapper, players will now compete for recognition against others of a similar standard — rewarding effort and improvement across the full membership and helping to foster a stronger sense of competition throughout the club.

For the time being, categories are defined as follows: Category 1 — handicap index below 12; Category 2 — 12 to 19; Category 3 — 20 and above.
