Inter-club competitions: Pierce Purcell team reach Munster East final

The fairytale continues, with a fantastic win for our Pierce Purcell team at home to Bandon GC on Saturday last. Led off by Liam O’Brien and Richard Tobin, our lads held an early advantage in 3 of the 4 matches. However, a determined fightback in the middle of the round brought Bandon right back into the game and ensured it was all going to come down to the last 6 holes. The lads held out well, winning games 1, 2 and 3, with game 4 halved, for a 3.5 to 0.5 scoreline. Well done to Liam & Richard, Mike & Conor, Mark & Paul, and David & Eoghan on a great victory. The Munster East final is on Mon 3rd August in Tramore GC, where the lads will meet either Bantry Bay GC or Cobh GC.

In the meantime, our Barton Shield team will take on Lee Valley GC at Tipperary GC, teeing off at 8am. Hopefully the lads will be able to keep this year’s inter-club success going.

Una Mulligan tops the leaderboard for Joan Curran Memorial

On Sunday, our lady members held the annual Joan Curran Memorial competition. Joan was a lovely lady and a great lady captain, and she is remembered fondly every year through this prestigious event.

This year’s competition was bathed in glorious sunshine, with fast summer ground and excellent greens providing the perfect conditions for a great turnout of our lady members. Una Mulligan made the most of those conditions to produce a fantastic score of 42 points, securing her name on the perpetual trophy for the very first time. Second and third places went to Geraldine Hickey and Mary Curran respectively, both finishing on 39 points.

All the prize winners paid tribute to Joan Curran’s lasting contribution to the club and thanked her family for their continued dedication in organising this competition each year in her memory.

Results.

1st Una Mulligan 42pts; 2nd Geraldine Curran 39pts; 3rd Mary Curran 39pts.

Cat 1. Eithne Ashby 36pts. Cat 2. Bridget Blackwell 35pts. Cat 3. Kathleen Broderick 31pts.

9-hole competition: Martina Coonan 17pts.

Junior Boys

On Monday last, our Junior Boys took part in the Munster East U18 boys inter club qualifier at Dungarvan GC. Our club was represented by Keelan Cotter, Jayden Murphy, Tom Halpin, Jean Pelser and Daniel Murphy. Despite competing well, unfortunately the lads didn’t qualify for the regional final. However, one of the highlights of the day was a fantastic eagle by Keelan on Dungarvan’s 18th hole …. the result of the many hours of practice that Keelan puts in every week. Well done to the lads for taking part, your day will come soon.
