West Waterford Golf Club News – w/c 11th August 2024

Lady Captain’s Weekend

The highlight of the Lady Captain’s year takes place next weekend, when our Lady Captain Bridget Blackwell (see photo attached) presents her prize to the Ladies on Saturday 17th. The much-coveted prize will go to the lady with the best aggregate score following two rounds of 18-hole stroke played over two days, Friday 16th and Saturday 17th.

Bridget is originally from Kilrossanty and moved to the Brickey Valley with her family over 20 years ago, and she has combined a busy family and work life, with her passion for golf. She joined West Waterford less than 10 years ago. Bridget is an excellent golfer, and won the Captain’s Prize in 2021, following it up by winning the Golfer of the year later in the year. She also represented West Waterford GC in the ILGU leagues on several occasions. Bridget is a wonderful club member with a ready smile and will always have some friendly chat for all she meets. She makes everyone welcome and encourages players of all levels.

Bridget has served on several committees over the years, in roles such as Secretary, Vice-Captain and now as our 2024 Captain. As part of her Lady Captain duties, Bridget also serves as a member of the club’s Management Committee and has worked tirelessly on behalf of the club with her colleagues, President Jim and Captain Niall, and her fellow committee members.

On behalf of the ladies, I wish Bridget and her family, husband Conor, and sons John, Niall and Mark, a very enjoyable and successful weekend. We hope that the weather will be kind to everyone involved and we hope, Lady Captain Bridget, that you will create lots of memories to recall with fondness in the years to come.

Golf Ireland Regional Finals

This past weekend we were excited to welcome the area finalists for the Golf Ireland, Ladies and Men’s Junior Cups & the Mixed Fourball inter-club competitions. In all, we had 10 different clubs participating, Monkstown GC, Cork GC, Thurles GC and Faithlegg GC in the Men’s Junior Cup, Fota Island GC, Kinsale GC, Muskerry GC and Tipperary GC in the Ladies Junior Cup and Muskerry GC, Youghal GC, Templemore GC and Tipperary GC in the Mixed Fourball.

In beautiful sunshine on Saturday, and the weather encouraging many supporters from all clubs to come visit West Waterford to support their club teams, we had a very competitive day’s golf. Monkstown GC and Thurles, in the Men’s Junior Cup, Fota Island GC and Kinsale GC in the Ladies Junior Cup and Muskerry GC and Templemore GC progressed to Sunday’s final. While Sunday started with a misty drizzle, the golf was very closely fought out, with all 3 cups being won in very tight finishes. Congratulations to Monkstown GC, Fota Island GC and Muskerry GC on winning the much-coveted pennants and qualifying to represent East Munster in the respective All Ireland Finals in the coming weeks.

Thank you to all our staff, as all our volunteers who helped greatly in making the day enjoyable for everyone. A big thank you to the Golf Ireland officials who did a fantastic job of officiating this great event and having it run so smoothly.

We are very grateful for the feedback we received from all clubs on the standard of our golf course, and the warm welcome everyone received over the past 2 days.

Junior Academy News

This week was another successful one for our junior golfers. On Wednesday, 6 boys travelled to Waterford GC for round 5 of the Deise League. Continuing from the success of round 4 at home in West Waterford, we had 2 boys in the prizes once more. Jayden Murphy finished in first place, carding an excellent 37pts and Anthony O’Donnell came in 4th with a super 34pts playing off a handicap of 4. Well done to both boys on great performances in their first time playing the course.

On Sunday, a team of 6 of our young golfers took part in round 3 of the 2024 Golf Sixes League in neighbouring Dungarvan GC. As this was the final fixture of the league, the results were announced, and West Waterford finished in 2nd place behind winners Waterford GC. Congratulations to our full panel of 12 players who all contributed to this great result. Our team on the day was Jack O’Connell, Oisín Fogarty, Daniel Murphy, Jayden Murphy, Meabh O’Connell and Tara O’Donnell (see photo attached).

Next week, we have the final round of the Deise League in Tramore GC on Tuesday, so there will be no regular Junior Golf in West Waterford.

Date for your diaries:

Anthony O’Donnell will hold his 2024 Junior Captain’s Prize on Tuesday 20th Aug..

Life on the Professional Circuit, with club members Séamus Power & Gary Hurley

After his two recent tournaments in Ireland, Gary Hurley had a week off this week. However, he returns to action on the DP World tour, next week, with an entry at the D&D REAL Czech Masters in Prague.

Meanwhile, in the US, Séamus Power was competing on the PGA Tour at the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina this weekend. This was an important week for Séamus as he attempted to remain within the top 70 on the FedEx ranking list, and thus qualify for the lucrative season ending FedEx playoffs. After weather delayed start, he returned rounds of 66, 70, 69 and 66 for a T28 finish. This has confirmed his inclusion in next week’s FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis Tennessee.
