Good Week for Seamus!

After his opening round on Thursday, a +3 round of 74, Seamus must have had fears of missing the halfway cut at the Genesis Invitational in Riviera. However, he showed his mettle with a -3 on Friday that saw him squeeze into the weekend on level par. Another good day followed on Saturday as he scored a -4 67, and he finished with a steady level par to end the week on -4 in a share of 31st place. He will earn valuable FedEx Cup points for his efforts and will now take a week’s rest to recharge the batteries.

Hideki Matsuyama charged through the field on Sunday shooting a -9 62 to take the win by 3 clear shots in the end from Will Zalatoris and Luke List.

Gary Hurley News

Gary was in South Africa again this week where he played the Dimension Data Pro-am on the Challenge Tour. Unfortunately, rounds of 74, 71 and 76 saw him miss the cut in a tie for 96th. He stays in South Africa for the fourth week in a row this week and will take his place in the NMB Championship where he will be hoping for better fortune.

Handicap News

2024 WHS Updates such as the below come into effect in Ireland on 1st April 2024.

Improvements have been made to the method used to handle Holes Not Played, which will be based on a player’s expected score rather than a score of net par. When one or more holes have not been played, this method takes your Score Differential for the holes you did play and combines it with an expected Score Differential for the holes you did not play, based on the scoring pattern of players with the same Handicap Index as you.

This new method will produce an 18-hole Score Differential that more accurately reflects a player’s ability.

The procedure for calculating a Score Differential using an expected score can be summarised as follows:

1. An expected Score Differential for the hole or holes not played is calculated, based on a given Handicap Index and a course of standard difficulty.

2. A Score Differential for the holes played is calculated using the player’s actual scores and the rating value of the holes played.

3. The Score Differential from the holes played is combined with the expected Score Differential to produce an 18-hole Score Differential.

4. For 9-hole rounds – An 18-hole Score Differential is created by combining the 9-hole Score Differential for the 9 holes played with the player’s expected score over 9 holes.

Note – expected scoring is a closed calculation which is generated by computer precision software.

Winter Rules

Please note the following Winter Rules in play for the duration of the Winter period:

  • Place on the ground within 6 inches on Fairway & Rough.
  • Bunkers: Out of play until further notice*. Drop outside bunker at nearest point of relief, not nearer the hole
  • Buggies are not permitted on the course until further notice*
  • *Keep an eye on the noticeboard and BRS for updates in relation to Bunker and Buggy status

Note: Given the soft ground conditions, a temporary rule is in place allowing players a free drop if a ball cannot be found in open ground, in agreement with playing partners.

Junior Academy News

2024 Junior Membership forms are available in the club office and parents are invited to rejoin their Juniors for the new year. The Fred Daly provisional panel has been selected and the relevant parents have been contacted in relation to this. Trials will begin in the next couple of weeks. As per the note above, there is a Rules Night being held in the clubhouse on Tuesday 12th March at 7pm. All J5 and J4 Juniors are requested to attend this important event.

Fantasy Golf 2024

Week 7 was the Genesis Invitational in Riviera, where Hideki Matsuyama shot the lowest final round (62) in the history of the tournament to win by three clear strokes from Will Zalatoris and Luke List. The former Masters Champion showed his class with this return to form and blew the rest of the field away in the final round. As this return to form came a little bit out of the blue, he wasn’t fancied by any of our Fantasy players to continue the trend for the year so far. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele let many of us down with their poor final rounds, but a lot of us still had good weeks. The final results will be communicated on WhatsApp once the FedEx Cup points are officially allocated.

Week 8 will see the tour move South for the Mexico Open at Vidanta. We are now coming to the crunch time in our league with only three tournaments left.
