Ladies Notes w/e Sunday 8th August 2021

Lady Captain’s week end.
The highlight of our golfing year the Lady Captain’s weekend takes place over two days 13th and 14th August.
Lady Captain Neil Suipéil
All Set for Lady Captain’s weekend!
I am quite sure that when Nell Suipéil agreed to be Phil Kelly’s Vice Captain back in late 2019 little
did she know what lay ahead! On Friday and Saturday our esteemed Lady Captain presents her
prize, an event which is the highlight of every golfer’s year. The last month has been somewhat of a
roller coaster for West Waterford Golf Club and its members. We had the wonderful win by Seamus
Power on the PGA tour which culminated in a magical homecoming reception followed by the
successful acquisition of the Club by the members through an on-line auction. Not the usual run up
for a Lady Captain preparing for her special week-end!
As a member of the Norris family from Ballinacourty Nell was immersed in Golf and of course the
GAA. However, her future lay across the bay in An Rinn! Nell married Liam and they have four
children Áine, Caoimhe, Liam and Padraig. While Áine is the boss at home with Nell and Liam,
Caoimhe married Conor and lives in West Cork. Liam and Sinead live in An Rinn as do Padraig and
Clare. The addition of three grandchildren Tadgh, Anna and Caragh keep Nell on her toes!
We are exceptionally lucky to have Nell at the helm this year. Nell originally joined West Waterford
in 1996 but due to work and family commitments had to put golf on hold. Luckily for us, Nell re-
joined seven years ago and during that time has served on the Committee for a number of years.
Nell does get time to actually go out and play golf and is a member of that elite group of people who
have managed to score a Hole in One in West Waterford!
Nell is a constant presence in the Clubhouse, meeting and greeting members and visitors. In recent
weeks she is always part of the galleries supporting the teams representing the Club. Nell was very
successful in securing Sponsorship for a number of competitions, the result of which, is a great
programme of events for the year. Outside of the Ladies Committee, Nell is currently Chairperson of
the Finance Committee who spearheaded the recent successful bid to acquire the club, a role which
requires enormous commitment and keen negotiating skills
The two-day stroke competition commences at 1.00pm on Friday and the presentation will take
place on Saturday evening. On behalf of our Lady Members, I would like to wish Nell the very best
for the week-end and we look forward to meeting up with the family. Keep practicing!
The Joan Curran Memorial: This competition in memory of Joan Curran, esteemed member, committee member and past Lady Captain usually takes place earlier in the year. The table of prizes was a joy to behold with well chosen prizes from local enterprises. Joan was a great supporter of West Waterford, encouraging new members and imparting her vast knowledge to them. Today the very popular winner of the beautiful prize sponsored by the Curran family was Kathleen Broderick, who began her golf with Joan and was a friend. Kathleen plays off 37 and had 40 points. Second was Marie T Curran, hcp 25 with 38 points, Gross Eithne Ashby hcp 22 had 34 points(15 gpts), third Bridget Blackwell hcp 32 had 37 pts, Cat 1 Jean Conway playing off 22with 33 points, Cat 2 Finola Butler hcp 24 with 35 pts, Mary Spratt hcp38 with 35 points. A heartfelt thanks to Ger and the Curran Family for today.
The Revive Active: The Revive Active fourball team met Cobh on Saturday 7th. Both teams were well matched being even after 9 holes. It was close till the very end and members were hoping and praying for a good outcome. An epic performance was put in. In Cobh, Deirdre Ruane and Una Mulligan, Denise Nugent and Finola Butler played while in West Waterford, Mary Lou and Marie T, Joe Swayne Joanne Fox, and June Whyte and Jean Conway played. We are now in the last 8 clubs in Ireland!!. We will be meeting the Connaught Champions in Trim (Knightsbrook) on Saturday September 4th . Thanks to all who came out to support. Special thanks to Eithne and Frances who were acting managers at home and in Cobh. What an achievement!
Who can look forward to the delights provided by Sólás na Mara. Well its Frances Carroll playing off 38 with a fantastic 44 points. Second was Úna Muligan (28) with 38 points and third was Bridget Broderick (35) with 35 points.
